IMI optimistic US will lift ban on Uzi sales

Israel Military Industries sources say the company wants to bring in partners for its light arms factory.

Sources inform “Globes†that Uzi manufacturer Israel Military Industries is optimistic that it will be able to resume sales in the US. Former President Bill Clinton signed a bill banning certain types of automatic and semi-automatic weapons, including the Uzi, blocking signed contracts worth millions of dollars.
The law expires next year, and IMI believes that the Republican administration and Republican-controlled Congress will not renew it.

The Republicans are close to the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA), which backs US gun makers. The NRA is one of the strongest lobbies in the US, basing its pro-gun arguments on the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

IMI sources said the company would focus in the future on the mini-Uzi, which currently requires a license to buy.

"We plan to bring in partners to the light arms plant, which also makes the Uzi," said the sources. "The fact that the law will expire and the US market will be reopened to us may raise the value of the factory. We'll be pleased if the law is changed before the investors visit the factory. At this stage, we have no special deployment in advance of a change in policy in the US."

I thought Mossberg was there partner ?

Israel and India adopt the Tavor and with the possible fall of the AWB, it makes sense to entice the U.S. domestic market as well. Especially considering the Israel/U.S. Military Aid/purchasing agreement.

Oh no! Howard Dean says that they'll be on the streets of New York and Chicago!!!

But since Dean is "pro gun", he probably meant that was a good thing!:D

IMI is dreaming. If Bush is too afraid to say he supports the expiration of the Assault Weapon ban, he is extremely unlikely to repeal the executive order that bans the import of Uzis.

Just for the record, I don't know if I'd call the UZI mediocre. I mean it pretty much defined the genere for a long time.

An MP5 it's not but on the other end of the spectrum a MAC-10 it's not either.

Just an observation. I would love to see it happen but I'm not gonna hold my breath and my efforts are aimed at the AWB right now. Baby steps, baby steps.

MicroBalrog: The mini-uzi has like an 8" barrel and a folding stock, making it a preban short barreled rifle (or machine gun, depending on the bolt), the press doesnt understand the difference between a license and a Form 4 (the ATF form required to transfer an NFA firearm). (The Uzi has like a 10" barrel standard, but can be fitted with the 16" barrel and not look as extremely goofy as a MiniUzi with a 16" barrel. The MicroUzi doesnt have a stock, IIRC, so its just a pistol)

All it would take for the 89 "import ban" to go away is an ATF director or Attorney General to expand the definition of "sporting firearm", right? Well, if the assault gun ban dies maybe we have a chance. Petition the administration that currently banned guns are no different than legally made domestic ones, then show them all the 3 gun matches similar competitions where these guns are used.

And yes, I know the 2nd amendment isn't about sports. But we can use their own logic against them.

Bush will renew the ban. What will happen is that the Senate will pass a bill.
There will be some squawking in the House but there will be a compromise that
gives rich people a new tax break.

If you think Bush is actively progun then you have also found the WMD stockpiles.

How many letters have you written to your Congressman, Senators and President Bush on this issue? (I've written about 10 over the last two years and I'm going to step up the pace after this September) When in doubt, get active and help out instead of whining about it being certain to happen.

Well said, Kharn. My thoughts exactly. I'm sick of people constantly taking the negative side of things. If we can't be at least optimistic enough to mobilize and act now, then what will we do when things are REALLY bad?

I wouldn't call the Uzi mediocre. When it first came out, it was quite novel and still has merits today. Just wish it was upgraded to 40 S&W. If I could buy one, I would.

I hope IMI decides to bring the Tavor TAR-21 plant over here to utilize the subsidy on US made goods, i'd love to have one of those cool, little bullpups.
