improved ak47 sight

I actually don't think the AK sights are all that bad. While they certainly aren't as good as the sights found on US rifles, they are good enough to hit a human torso with out to 300 yards. I've got a pair of Krebs peep sights for AK's and I can't shoot as well with them as I can with a standard notch sight.

IMO, a peep sight belongs back by your eye.

I was going to say, peep sights only work well when they are close to your eye. The notch sights work best when they are located further from the eye.

I don't mind the sights on AK's, SKS's, or mosins, and shoot well enough with them, and don't think there is a better option.

I put some champion night sights on my ak, both front and rear. They are better for me because the front sight is larger, the rear sight notch is larger and even in the daylight it's easier to line up because of the tiritum lights. I think they are an improvement but I had to file the dickens out of the rear sight base so it would fit properly. I also think they cost too much.

However I've also run across a new red dot sight that really looks promising. Some folks think sights such as this aren't really good because they require a battery. Something bad for a sthf carbine.

I looked into modern AK iron sights... not satisfied, I went with the UltiMAK gas tube optic rail Aimpoint Micro T-1 combination
This combo allows you to perfectly co-witness the factory original iron sights.

For me, the bloody rear sight notch was too shallow. I got better shot group results by carefully filing the rear notch deeper.
I also have a quad rail fore-grip so a red dot works just fine for me when I tire of shooting with the irons.

H2O Man, how well is that UltiMAK gas tube working out for you? Do you think it would fit a galil? I would love to put that on my golani...

Dutchman01, I freaking love the red dot... I would love to have one but I cant justify spending almost as much cash for a sight than I spent for the rifle...

Voland - Ultimak does not make a rail for the Galil nor would any of the ones they make fit. http://ultimak.com/

While I wasn't horrible with the sights on the AK, I wanted to put a red dot sight on it. As far as I'm concerned, Ultimak is the only way to go.


It's a bit front heavy, but I'm happy with it. A rock solid mount, plus the use of a low ring allow co-witness of the sights like H2O's set up.

dutchman- that new AK red dot site looks promising! thanks for posting that link. the AK is such a great platform but you always had to do alot of customizing to be able to use good optics/sites. no more! cheers

In my opinion the issue sights aren't that bad. They do require practice to get good with as they are different from what's on most people's rifles.

At close range I use the ears of the front sight for aiming. If the target is roughly centered between the ears, pull the trigger. You will get a hit.

At longer ranges the tangent sights do take more time to align than peep sights. OTOH, I can get hits on 12" steel plates at 300 yards with my AKs while a timer is running. Doing that has gotten easier in the last 6 months as I've been shooting (and dry firing) my AK more. BSW

The Aimpoint Micro is a good option on the Ultimak. Might also want to consider the new LaRue combination red dot/iron sight that replaces the stock rear sight assembly, which looks like a winner -- cowitnessed, adds even less weight to the weapon than the rail/micro combination, and quite a bit less expensive also.

The Russian side mount plus one of their optics (Kobra, PK-AS, etc.) is also a viable option. The main drawback to these mounts for serious use is that if you have any sort of stoppage requiring removing the dust cover from the weapon, it's just another thing slowing you down (and you're already having a bad day, obviously) -- AKs, while a robust design, can and do jam from time to time when run hard like any other firearm. In some ways this may not be that big a deal -- if your AK stoppage requires popping the top cover to clear in a firefight you've hopefully got a pistol to transition to, since it's a hard enough to clear those kinds of stoppages rapidly without life and death stress degrading motor skills, etc.

Exactly what kind of stoppages are you trying to fix that involve removing the dust cover? I've never seen any jam clearing technique that involved tearing down the weapon: If it's that far gone you're better served by getting behind cover and going to another weapon. BSW
