Improving Standard AR trigger pull technique

Using the safety as a crutch is the worst idea I have heard in a long time.
Stock ar triggers can be shot well without using a safety device as a trigger control aid.

:what:

Oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:cuss:

No No Nooooooooooooo!

Can I be less clear than that?

P.S.: Dont' take it personal. In fact, it is a good thing you posted it. It is a good thing that people know what not to do....:D

you can use a single stage like a two stage once you are familiar with the way the creep stacks up. It is also simple and cheap to change out a lighter 4 lb spring. Take your wifes nail file and polish out the sear and trigger to get rid of the grit

If the rifle has been shot a few hundred times, no polishing will make the trigger better. Like adelbridge said, changing the spring can go a long way and it is cheap.

I wonder what the question was?

Its kinda considered bad form to delete a post after 8 people have responded to it.

Big bad boy had a big bad idea....he was using pressure on the safety previously to pull trigger.....:)

I removed it because in hindsight it was an unsafe act, and i care about proper use and others.

I have built and used ARs professionally and for leisure and been shooting a long time, since age 4 to be exact. And was attempting to help others improve their shooting. AR trigger pull is a common complaint and do to their popularity was only attempting to help others.

In hindsight, my suggestion was not the wisest idea, and while I have not experienced a catastrophic failure, someone else might and I wouldnt want to have that on my conscience.

The response early to by post was very adamant that this was not a good idea. Could use an explanation to your thoughts, however in the form of good judgement and safe shooting I deleted it.

And its Big Bad BOB, not Boy.

I was just joking on your name. I know it is Bob. We all have some bad ideas sometimes.

Trust me, I was smiling when I wrote each message. And like I said, it is a good non-consequence teaching moment for many readers.

What about an "AR-15 trigger pull technique" is any different than the technique you would use on any other autoloading rifle?

Apply steadily increasing pressure to the trigger, straight to the rear, until the rifle fires. Hold the trigger to the rear for just a moment, then release it just enough to reset the sear, never letting your finger leave the trigger.

Henschman, what you just said this is the basic of marksmanship training. It is thought in every Appleseed as part of the six steps (In fact it is the step 6a).

No, it doesn't release the hammer removing the safety, it allows you to eliminate the creep or heavy pull of 5-8lb trigger down to about 2-2.5lb.

1. aim at your intended target
2. squeeze trigger with selector on SAFE
3. rotate selector to FIRE
4. squeeze the trigger

When you rotate the selector while applying constant pressure your trigger will be almost at the point of disengagement, hence you have trigger set at the point of release when you rotate, ergo creating a lighter trigger.

Not the only one with the idea,

You can see at the 26 second mark, the shooter applies pressure, rotates selector, then fire.

Of course you never trust your safety, but the weapon is already pointed at the intended target.
The explanation from the shooter in the vid is as follows:
That clicking you're hearing when I pull the trigger is because the safety is on. I like to get a feel of the trigger with my trigger finger before I actually disengage the safety to take the shot. I just want the pad of my finger to be as sensitive to the trigger as possible for each shot.
I interpret that as he is ensuring he has the exact finger position for his shot, not a preload of the trigger. A good trigger is the cure for removing creep. This shooter was just eliminating a human variable.

1. aim at your intended target
2. squeeze trigger with selector on SAFE
3. rotate selector to FIRE
4. squeeze the trigger

So, is this the "unsafe act" that was deleted from the original post and then re-posted?

I'm just curious, because I have no idea what the OP was doing that was so unsafe. I think it is of much greater value to leave the post and advise strongly against doing whatever it is that is unsafe. I may be doing exactly the same wrong thing, but will never learn if it's been deleted.

So the rifle was pointed at the target.

No limbs, digits, or other foreign objects were infront of the barrel.

Bad shooting form? Possibly.

Unsafe? Wait... what? I mean unless doing this could randomly cause your rifle to self implode then whats the big deal.

It can produce a negligent discharge. I mean it in the way when the safety goes off, the rifle may fire without the consent of the shooter. Slight possibility depending on the pressure on the trigger. The problem here is a usage of the safety that is not the intended usage of it.
