So my friend bought a Kel Tec PF9 today....and I'm not sure what happened but I walked out of the gun shop with one too. I had recently been looking for something small for summer carry, and lets just say, my willpower isn't that strong

This is the first gun-related purchase I have made without months of forethought. Hopefully I won't regret it. Initial impressions - great purchase! I'm not a fan of the long trigger pull and double reset. BUT, for a small, light handgun in 9mm, it is a great option.

If you don't have trouble hitting the mag release during firing you should really like it.

I have several thousand rounds through mine and it has always been reliable and a great shooter. Mine gets used as a BUG when I carry either my Glock 19 or HK P7M8 and generally is in a pocket holster tho it works great in a concealment t-shirt as well. The .22 conversion for it is great fun and a cheap way to practice.

The trigger on mine now feels much like a nice K-frame trigger, lot's of dry fire using snap caps helped greatly. I would also recommend taking an emery board and making sure there is no flashing from the molding process left were it can irritate your hand when firing. I have never had a problem with the mag release.

Hopefully you have better luck than I did. I owned two and tried to give them a chance but I just did not have any luck. They are so slim and carry perfectly but every time I shot the magazine would pop out (both pistols w/ and w/o pinky extensions)

Good luck though, hopefully I just got all the lemons.

emery board works wonders on the plastic catch....you gatta get out the heavy artillery, the dremel, for the metal ones...

The trigger pull is pretty long, but then, I am used to a 1911. At least it is pretty smooth, and not too heavy.
My wife loves her PF-9, and it has started to grow on me as well. I have thought seriously about getting one for myself when funds allow.

They are great reliable little guns...the price is nice on the wallet as well. Knock down the sharp edges and flash lines or get a coverall for the grip. I've owned and shot the same one for 3 years or so and it shoots good groups out to 15 yards which is my eye limit.

Dry firing will help you get used to the trigger which by the way breaks very sharply on mine. IWB or on the belt it is easy to forget you are wearing a gun.
The recoil is very manageable and they drop back on target quickly. They are bad medicine in a small package. Enjoy your new gun.

I have Kel Tec P3AT and I like it, but the trigger does kind of suck. If anyone has both, does the trigger on the PF9 have to travel as far to reset as it does on a P3AT?

I loved mine for summer carry for a while, but now it's more my dress up gun. For the summer I normally can get by with my PT145, but the pf9 still gets some carry time.

I never regretted getting the pf9, I did get rid of my p3at only because I got the pf9. You get the 9mm not much bigger, but when I got the p3at they didn't have the pf9. Oh well.

Congrats on the new purchase, put a box through it and stick it in your pocket pronto!

Thanks 451 Detonics, I'll check it out.

Yo Mama - I'm on the same page as you. This will definitely be my "dress-up" gun. My Glock 19 will do the major lifting for most of the year.

So far I'm really liking it (other than the long trigger). I have done my best to "accidentally" release the magazine while firing, but I can't seem to do it. That's a good thing I guess...

Next step, pocket holster!

Impulse buy.

I did the same thing went into buy a speed six walked out with a speed six and a PF-9. I can't shoot mine for spit, hope yours works out better.

I've carried mine for 2 1/2 years now. It's a real good concealed piece. Mine rides in a DeSantis Nemesis holster. I've found that a Hogue Hand-all slip on grip tames the recoil sting quite a bit.

Good Choice

Last month Gun Tests Magazine gave it the nod over the LC9. I think your "impulse buy" was a good choice.

Not to completely hijack, but mind sharing why? I've been toying with the idea of getting rid of the taurus 738 and up-sizing to the LC9 for the simple reason of ammo availability.

Had a PF9 but, as a lefty, I kept bumping the mag release and having to reset it in the grip. As it was a pocket carry gun, it was a definite drawback!

Mine goes with me almost everywhere ... it is in the right rear pocket of my 501s as I type this. I bought it several years ago, not too long after they came out.

With a little dremel action I carefully modded under the trigger guard & the pointy "OUCH" nose of the finger rest on the mags and now all 3 fingers will (just barely) fit on the grip.

I carry it in a DiSantis Nemesis hoster that mildly "locks into" my 501 pocket so that the PF-9 draws smoothly, sans holster ... the pistol does protrude from the pocket, but I where untucked shirts or, in cool weather, a jacket/coat.

Respectfully, I have found out that "Gun Tests" magazine findings, and the findings of those Sunday morning movie reviewers have one thing in common..

IF they rate a gun, or movie, highly, I generally find I don't care for it... Weird, eh? (and visa versa)....

I'm not anti-KelTec, as in years past I had a very good P32, and P11, but if the PF9 is any better than my Ruger LC9 has been, I'd be very, very surprised.

I'm glad we all have options, and for those folks who like KelTec's, I'd say the PF9 will suit them perfectly... But at the same time I'd venture a guess that folks who like Ruger's will be equally happy with the LC9..

For me personally, my LC9 has been absolutely reliable right out of the box (as has my buddy's who led me to buy mine).. Surprisingly accurate, and good enough for cc duty to send my HK P2000sk to the gun safe.

I would suggest anyone with no experience with either the KelTec or Ruger spend a little time on the various firearm forums using the "search" function inquiring about BOTH choices (actually when comparing ANY two different firearm choices) as I prefer input from actual owners, (and bunches of 'em) to a review in ANY gun magazine, or magazines.

I subscribed to "Gun Tests" years ago, but MY experiences with some of the guns they tested were contrary to the findings of the Gun Test reviewers which led me to lose faith in their findings.

FWIW, from personal experience with my two previous KelTec's, I would think the PF9 is probably a very good pistol.. I KNOW my LC9 is..

No offense, not confrontin', just conversin'..:)

Best Wishes,

Jesse

ccw_steve,
I think that you made a great choice. I bought one on a whim too, and I couldn't be happier with it. Mine has about 800rds through it. It is reliable, easy to conceal, and actually really accurate for such a small gun. It has great sights and the trigger is actually really nice. It is long, and there is not much of a reset but it is nice and smooth. I can now switch between my keltec and g-19 without issue. As far as accuracy I have no issue getting 20yd head shots. It is inexpensive but it works, I am still very surprised how great it is.

I guess it comes down to whether or not the extra money is worth it to the individual buyer for a couple of (in my opinion) worthless safeties. I think the PF-9 is at least the equal of the Ruger at a lower price.

KelTec PF9 ain't pretty, but it gets the job done for me...

It is reliable and carries very well in the pocket or IWB.
