Hello everyone, I have been loading 308 Win. using IMR 4895 for a long time. I can't seem to find 4895 at this time. I have data to load 168 and 175 Matchkings with IMR 4064. My question is has anyone used this combination and how accurate was it. I will be shooting this from a Rem. 700.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

4064 is a great powder. It is my go to in the .223 Remington. I have not tried working up any .308 loads with it.... yet.

I would be very interested in your results.

I've used 4064 in .308 caliber for 165-168 grain bullets. In one rifle, 45 grains with a Hornady Match bullet has turned in wicked accuracy out to 700 yards. I'm talkin' in the quarter-minute category.

The sweet spot for 165-168 grain bullets seems to be from 44-44.5 grains. Of course, that requires starting at about 43 and working up for safety's sake...but most rifles I've used it in will harmonize somewhere in that range.

For the heavier 175-grain pill...a reduction will probably be necessary...and it might come in at 42-43 grains for the top load. No way to know until ya try...but load development is half the fun.

You can get into insane arguments with people about what is the better 308 powder, 4895 or 4064. In my experience they both shoot extremely well, it is just that 4895 throws better.

Either powder will provide sub MOA groups over a broad band of charges.

99 percent of my loads are target loads, I don’t need to push the envelope hard out to 300 yards. Seldom do I shoot anything but 168’s out to 300 yards.

However I did have some loads with 150 Sierra hunting bullets, and this is my data, along with 168 Match bullets. For an M1a the maximum I would load a 168 is with 42.5 grains IMR 4064 but I am certain in a bolt rifle that is not a maximum load.

If you can purchase AA4064 for less, I would recommend that powder. I have shot it and tested it. My recollection is that it is shorter grained, and a tad slower. It shot extremely well in my bolt rifle and in a match M1a. Target below.

4064 is my best powder for 168-177gr bullets in two different 308s.

I have had fantastic luck with 4064 in my 7.5 Swiss. It is virtually identical to .308 Win.

For me 43.0 grains under a 168 SMK has given results that I can't argue with. Keep in mind this is from a rifle that was built in the 1950's.

YMMV but for me 4064 is THE powder when it comes to rifle rounds.

43 grains of 4064 under 165 sierra hunting bullets works well for me. My old Ruger will put 5 shots right at MOA with that load. The 308 is the first reloading work up for me, so I have only measured and thrown 4064. The throws vary by up to .3 grains from my lee equipment, so I have had to keep an eye on it and add or subtract powder if necessary.

I am in the process of shooting up all my various powders and am going to only have 2:AA-2460 for my .223 and IMR-4064 for my .243, .308,. and .30-06. IMR-4064 can be used for 55gr .223 bullets and up but I can't find any data for lighter bullets. The only difference between -4064 and Varget I can see is Varget meters better but I can't seem to get it to shoot any better.
My CZ-550 Varmint in .308 likes:

168 Sierra MK
40.8gr IMR-4064
Win LR Primer
R-P Cases
C.O.L. 2.82

This load will shoot 1 hole clover leafs at 100 yrds and .25" at 200 yrds. Haven't tried it further because of range limitations. Good luck and keep us posted.
