I have shot IMR 4227 in a 4 5/8th" barreled handgun in .45 Colt works and burns completley, you need the correct primer and a heavy crimp, it does better with a heavier bullet 255 or >, it also shot better groupings with cast bullets.
Does the .30 carbine headspace on the case mouth are you shooting 110 grain bullets? If so you might not be able to get enough crimp(taper?) to burn the charge completly, you may try a magnum primer, but make sure you work the load up!
