Can anyone tell me what type of powder imr 4227 is, ie flake, extruded or whatever?

Extruded stick.

All IMR rifle powders are extruded, as ball powder hadn't been invented yet when
Improved Military Rifle powder was named.

Hardly any rifle powder is flake type.

Only IMR SR-7625 and SR-4756 are extruded flake, and those are only used in very reduced loads.

I've used some IMR powders and they were extruded (4350 and 4064) but didn't know about 4227 and was considering getting some and just wondered.

I tried with an internet search but couldn't ever get a definitive answer.

Its a great powder by the way. I use it extensively with my 357 Max and 357 Mag. It is really good for hot loads!

Works for 22 Hornet all the way up to .45 Colt +P and beyond, it's good stuff!

Concerning using IMR4227 in .30 carbine, I tried it once, but it left a couple small yellowish colored particles of unburned powder in the chamber so the next round wouldn't chamber. That was years ago. I don't have the 30 carbine any more and I can't remember what the load was.
Maybe sometime I'll try it on .357 magnum. It's a slower burning powder so I wonder if works well with a short barrel handgun?

Works fine if you load it hot enough (within limits). Download it a bit and you can get an incomplete burn.

I have shot IMR 4227 in a 4 5/8th" barreled handgun in .45 Colt works and burns completley, you need the correct primer and a heavy crimp, it does better with a heavier bullet 255 or >, it also shot better groupings with cast bullets.

Does the .30 carbine headspace on the case mouth are you shooting 110 grain bullets? If so you might not be able to get enough crimp(taper?) to burn the charge completly, you may try a magnum primer, but make sure you work the load up!

16.0 grains with a 158gr jacketed bullet. My .30 Carbine load with a 110gr bullet is 15.0 grains.

4227 also works good in a lot of cast boolit rifle loads.

In 45 Colt 17.7 gr over a 250 gr LRN with magnum primers is one of my favorite loads.

357 mag I have had good results with 15.8 gr (compressed) over a 158 gr LSWC with magnum primers. Also 15.0 gr over a hard 148 gr LWC and magnum primers.
