IMR 4350 or IMR 4831

Either will do a good job with the 180 grain bullets in 30-06. Often IMR 4831 will do better with 180 grain and heavier bullets in 30-06. Not a big issue but with a 22" barrel I'd try IMR 4350 1st and for a 24 or 26" barrel I'd use IMR 4831 1st.

I went with IMR 4831 E mailed Sierra they said 4831 prob work better with 180 grain I just loaded some to try started with 53.9 grains and a fed 210M primer hornady case seated to 3.335

rg1's recommendation towards you worked well in my Rem 700. I used IMR 4350 and IMR 4895 for my 150 grainers and IMR 4831for my 165 and 180 grainers. I can't speak for which combination your rifle would prefer but I cross loaded between the weight and powder combos and IMR 4831 proved to perform better on the heavier bullet grains I loaded then the both the 4350 and 4895 did.

I guess I'm going to buck the trend. I have never seen a 30-06 that didn't shoot well with loads made with 4350. I feel 4831 is a little slow for the 30-06 but it will work.

Will 4831 work, of course just like 4895 and even faster powders will work on the faster side. Not so many years ago a lot of reloaders were telling me 4350 was too slow a powder for all but the heaviest bullets in the 30-06, I disagreed and now there are reloaders right here saying 4350 might be too fast for those same bullets. Hey, go figure... :) That's why they sell so many powders and they all stay on the market. Hodgdon lists 19 of their powders in 180gr 30-06 loads so none of us are wrong. They even list Supreme 780 which is slower than 4831 so 4831 can't be too slow for that combination but most of the powders are faster than 4350.

Sorry for the long post, I was kinda thinking out loud...

I like both of those powders, but IMR-4350 has long been a favorite of mine for 30-06. But I've also been finding RL22 to be a great powder for cartridges like the 30-06, 6mm, .243, .270 win, and the 7mm RM. Either way, IMR-4350 or IMR-4831 SC or standard are excellent performers for this cartridge.

My only suggestion if you go with either one of those, is that in my experience, they perform best at the upper end of the charge tables, at or near max.
