I am shooting a .270 caliber. I am using the hornady sst 150 grain bullets. (maybe be switching to 130 grain bullets though). Just trying to get you folks ideas on which powder would group this bulllet the best?
I am not a .270 owner. However, last year I worked up a hand load for a buddy's Rem 700 in .270. I use IMR 4350 and 130 gr Sierra Game King bullets. I used 53 grs of powder. Right out of the gate, the gun shot 1.5" groups. With a little playing with the OAL, the it started shooting under 1" groups. I was really impressed with the rifle. It was a plain Jane 700 from Walmart.
I never liked a 150 grain bullet in a 270 Winchester but I only hunt deer. My favorite 270 Winchester deer load is 56 grains of IMR 4831 with a Speer 130 grain boattail bullet. Great accuracy and deadly on deer. I use this load in 4 rifles and it shoots MOA in all of the rifles. BW
The 270W has always been my go to rifle. I have been reloading for about 50 Years & the best accuracy for my rifle after many hours of trial & error has been with the 130 Grain speer boat tail using IMR-4350 Powder with CCI Mag Primers. I have used my 270 also for shooting Ground Hogs & found the 110 grain very accurate with the same powder. Good luck
I'm not a fan of either powder or bullet. I like H4831SC or RL 19 or RL22. For a bullet mine likes 130 or 140 gr Accubonds. Also Hornady interlock bullets. But as mentioned I use CCI mag primers and seems to tighten every load. But work up slowly an you will find that the .270 isn't that finacky. I use rem or win brass it doesn't seem to matter for my gun. Good luck let us know how you make out.
