OK, so I was at an indoor range today but my in-laws and was peering though the case of 1911's (a lot of them). I have a S&W 1911 and have been fairly happy with it. I asked to see a Colt Gold Cup Trophy, least to say I wasn’t impressed. The grips had cuts in them and the grip screws had several large burs. When I twisted the gun in my hand I would hear a rattling noise. I asked to look at a full size Kimber that was on the shelf, I'm not sure what model it was but it has adjustable rear sites and it was SS. It was very nice, nicer than my S&W. Locked up super tight and was super clean. The guy then hands me and Dan Wesson Marksman. Wow, what a beautifully built gun. Fit and finish was better them all the others I had held that day. Then I noticed that he was wearing his own DW Bob tail. Just so happens that they had a new one in the case. I have always preferred full size 1911's but let me tell you. I think I’m in Love. Ok, after all that blah blah blah. Do any of you guys have any experience with either the Marksman or the Bob tail?

I don't have any personal experience with them, but I have been listening to the comments from people about DW 1911s for a while. I don't recall anyone being unhappy with them since CZ took over. They are supposed to have all real steel parts except for either a thumb safety or grip safety (I can't remember which).

In my estimation it is as near a high end 1911 as one can get without the lofty price tag.

I have three Dan Wesson 1911s. All are excellent weapons.

I like the CBOB for carry. I like the Pointman Seven (like a Marksman, but with the front cocking serrations) for the range. I like the Heritage for either carry or range, it is my favorite Dan Wesson.

You will not go wrong with any model you choose. Dan Wesson 1911s are the best bang for the buck at this time.

Best regards.

I have the RZ45 Heritage. Great gun. I would buy another one tomorrow if mine vanished in a freak boating accident. Most of their 1911s are very similar to each other except for the Valor which has a different frame (forged) and finish..checkered front strap (so does the bobtail), etc. The others just have different sights, some have FCS...some don't, some have solid triggers, some have skeleton ones..stuff like that. What they all have is a great fit and finish for the money. Well made guns for sure. Actually, I think they are the best value in 1911s today.

For concealed carry I'd probably suggest the bobtail although I prefer the 5" 1911s myself. For range use I'd get the marksman or the pointman if you like the fcs. I prefer the cleaner look of the Marksman or the RZ45 myself.

I recently acquired a CBOB and, so far, there have been no problems. A good value for the money.

Lots of 1911's here, CBOB is by far my nicest and highest quality.. and it wasn't even the cheapest! You won't be disappointed... very good stuff.

I have a Marksman, what a piece of garbage! JUST KIDDING! I love my DW's, especially the Marksman. I got rid of the billboard grips and got checkered diamond cocobolo magwell grips. This gun has no magwell but I just like the way the grips look. I also got rid of the allen grip screws, got no use for allen grip screw in a 1911, they are not as strong as slotted screws. here she is; Marksman.jpg

Wasn't Dan Wesson really inexpensive a few years back? I remember thinking I wanted one and the prices were really low, near $500, but now they are all near $1000.

Very, Nice! I don't know that I'll ever be able to get a conceal carry here in MD so I think I might look more into the Marksman. If I was back in PA I would be serious about the bobtail.

Not being facetious, but does "fake" steel exist?

"Real" steel is a slag term for forged or machined from bar stock parts. Most current 1911 manufacturers use quite a bit of MIM for parts, which is arguably a bad thing. I personally believe that the 1911 was designed with "real" steel parts in mind and that a shift from that would be a compromise of the design.

Will MIM ruin a pistol... maybe, maybe not but I like the peace of mind that the good stuff provides.

What part of the Northeast are you in if you don't mind me asking.

Not at all, I am in Luzerne County.

Para's are loaded with MIM too, at least the one I have and all of the others I've seen.

In the Dan Wesson forum there was a recent discussion of upcoming price increases. My take on it is that the company does not want to bring the quality down, since that is their great selling point. So, they will raise the price. The word is out about DW's, and they can't keep up with demand. The simple principles of trade still apply in spite of all the fantasy of Mr. Obama.

Wait till Obamanation produces a 1911, lets see what the price tag verses quality will be!

Heh heh, yeah, just wait.

got my valor

:)
found a "used" unfired valor at a local gun store about a month ago. had seen pics and heard reports for over a year so i was interested for sure. i was impressed-i was torn--i left the store and drove about a 2miles before i stopped, turned around and went back. price tag was 1150. i made an offer of 1050--credit card approved--sold!

brought it home and then i had to figure how to pay for it--put my trp on gb and sold it within a week! liked my trp--love my valor. accurate, beautiful and fits my hand like a glove. haven't decided if i will carry as i have a colt officers--but with no ambi or magwell, this weapon is slimmer, sleeker and will be easier to conceal.

if you can find a dw deal, do it--you won't be sorry.;)

you can't go wrong with a DW. I own a Heritage, and have shot and handled a CBOB. GREAT for carry, as mentioned above they're all great guns. tight fit, great finish, and not too hard on the wallet. CBOBs are going quick though so you might want to grab one while you still can, if you can find one! I know I wish I did ha

If you want a CBOB get it now! Talk on 1911forum.com is that they will only make CBOB's as you and I know them for the ...wait for it...California market. There will be Bobtailed Commander sized guns (one even with an aluminum frame which I might have to get) but the "CBOB" will only be for sale in California. Look for a nice price hike to boot. I'm into Commander sized guns so I could be tempted to go for the aluminum gun which they'll be calling the "Guardian" to go with my CBOB but I think they might be pricing themselves out of my market.
