CRIME: Woman thwarts break-in attempt at M'ville house

MERRILLVILLE | A gun-carrying Merrillville mom didn't pull any punches when a man wearing a black ski mask tried to break into her house Wednesday night.

She threatened to shoot him with the 40-caliber handgun she was holding and he backed off and ran away, police said.

The woman, who lives in the 5300 block of Cleveland Street, told police she was changing her baby's diaper at about 7 p.m. when she heard a noise, Detective Lt. Don Toth said.

She told police she went to the front of her house, opened the front door and observed a man in a black ski mask attempting to break in.

The woman slammed her door shut and pushed back as the man continued to attempt to open the door with his shoulder, Toth said.

She yelled she had a gun and would fire if he continued, and the man fled on foot, Toth said.

Police said the woman did have a gun, which she showed them.

She described the burglar as black, thin, about 5 foot 8, with a black ski mask and black sweatshirt.

I would hope she doesn't just open the front door to have a peek any longer....

Personally, I'd have left the door unlocked behind me in a panic to get my gun ;)

Ditto on the opening the door thing, Drizzt. Even though she had the good sense to be armed, that response to noises outside could've bought her an Honorable (?) Mention at the Darwin Awards. Had her would-be "visitor" been a bit larger or more determined, we would've most likely seen a much different article.

Hopefully, she'll be motivated to at least install a wide-angle door peep. It's unfortunate but true that opening your own door without having a good idea of what's out there first is not a Good Idea anymore. Doing it with an infant in the house, even less so.

Thank the Lord that the lesson came cheaply this time.
