Good afternoon everybody,

I'm in the market for a new full size 1911 in stainless. I'd like to keep it around the $1000 mark, and I'm just looking to see my different options and hear y'alls opinion on accuracy, reliability, function, quality, value, etc. I appreciate everybody's help and opinion.

Thanks again!

I just picked up a Kimber custom Crimson carry for that price and couldn't be happier. I was extremely surprised by how accurate it is out of the box. Favorite pistol I own and I've had many. Oh and it was my first 1911 so there are many other good choices I'm sure.

This thread should probably be moved to Handguns: Auto loaders

I have the Springfield Range Officer, with a Kart target barrel. The initial purchase plus the barrel plus fitting the barrel came in just below your target price.

SA Ranger Officer, STI or Ruger. All very nice for price making them a good value, and all Series 70 design.

Do yourself a favor and look at the S&W 1911 E-series. It is a great gun with a lot of features that you find on 1911s costing considerably more.

Presently, the new Colts are getting great feedback on the 1911 boards for fit, finish, accuracy and out of the box reliability. :)

Two basic, no-frills 1911s that are great shoots and backed by great Company's are the Colt and Springfield Mil-Spec... and both definitely fall in your price range.
I own both and they have been flawless shoots. If I were going with ONE... it would be the Colt 1991!!

Whatcha want it for??? Do you have specific intentions for this purchase or are you looking for a Sunday Driver? Finally, do you have any previous 1911 experience or just great expectations from reading about them?

Few people ever discuss what they don't like, the malfunctions they did have or the disappointments they experienced. If you're ready to let loose of $1k+ you are right to arm yourself with information and if someone is to help you they must do the same. So, whatcha want it for??? HD, SD, CC or R&R?

Colt XSE

I have had great luck with Colts. I have had terrible luck with Kimber and factory remediated problems with Springfield.

I've had a little experience with the 1911 platform. I owned a colt 1991, which was sold to fund a deer rifle. It'll mainly be a range/ farm/ show gun, and be carried on occasion. I have my ppq and sig p238 for everyday carry.

You could buy this one, but nowhere near a grand!

This is a beauty, APWCogan customized it for me, the VZ grips really make it all come together.

id say if you can find one, a used dan wesson is a great choice. i found my valor for about 1000, which is a bit of a steal, but they're out there. great finish and feel, definitely worth more than i got it for. a friend got one of the new specialists from DW, brand new for about 1300, and it is very sexy.

other choices i would definitely recommend would be a springfield range officer or colt xse

Dan Wesson if you can find one. I bought one of their "seconds"...a RZ45 Heritage for $779 new. The cosmetic flaw is about the size of the tip of a finely sharpened pencil. I had to look at their photocopy that showed the location of the flaw circled on it with marker to actually find it. That's how anal they are about their guns. It's a fantastic gun. Do some research on Kimber before spending that kind of money. You can do a lot better.

In 2004 I bought my Dan Wesson PM7-S for $550. That was the best deal on a gun purchase I ever got - not because it was a steal, but because nobody had heard of DW making a 1911 before, so they were all that cheap.

FF to 2012 and those same guns sell for $1000+. It is a fantastic 1911, in every sense of the word. I wish I bought three at the time.

Just got a Ruger after a lot of research. Am not at all disappointed. And it's SS, with a lot of the stuff you'd pay more for aftermarket.

I think that the new SIG 1911 pistols offer more for the money than just about any other maker out there. Though I haven't put many rounds through it yet, I love the fit and finish of the TTT model I just purchased. Only time will tell if the pistol shoots as well as it looks...

The only problem with the SIG is that is uses a few proprietary parts so they aren't replaceable with just anyone's part. Also the slide is a bit different so holster fit can be hit or miss. Sig isn't the only one that has proprietary parts in their 1911 but I think Sig strays the furthest out of the big name manufacturers.

The DW Heritage would be tough to beat as delivered. The Ruger at $450 less would get you a lot of gun for the money if you could find one.

I think the STI Spartan or the SA Range Officer would both be worth a look though neither is stainless.

Colt XSE, Colt 1991, or Colt Series 70. All three available in stainless.

The XSE will be right at $1,000, the Series 70 slightly less, and the 1991 $900 or so. Check GunBroker.com for latest prices.

Here's a stainless Series 70 from "gc70" on the 1911Forum.com. I really like how the right side of the slides on 2012 Colts have no markings.

Dan Wesson, if you can find one.

Second choice would be SA Loaded Stainless.

I own two springfields, so I recommend springfield. Don't have any personal knowledge of the rest but mine are in the price range you recommend accept one and both are very reliable.

A couple of weeks ago I pulled the trigger on my first 1911. I put a Remington R1 in stainless on layaway for $618 shipped.

I wanted to keep it under $750 and did a lot of research and feel like I got a good deal. The R1 has not been around as long as others, but the majority of the reports seem good. The price was too hard to pass on
