Missed pocket 1911 market?

Before Glock came out with the 43 you could always find Glock fans who would swear that they could pocket carry their G26 just fine. The SCCY is a double stack sub compact I actually did stuff one into the front pocket of my Levis jeans - no holster. I could easily see the entire back of the pistol almost extending above the pocket. It is a tight fit and as you can imagine, it prints very obviously.

There isn't any official definition of what a pocket pistol is but I can tell you that at 5.7" OAL the CPX doesn't come out of your normal front jeans pocket easily or quickly, and this isn't even with a holster which would make things even tighter.

I haven't seen a double-stack handgun in a major caliber that actually works as a pocket-gun for normal jean pockets.

There is no way in H3ll I would carry a pistol in a pocket without some sort of holster protecting the trigger. I went for a quote un-quote pocket pistol for the thin profile and the fact that it wears IWB near invisibly and comfortably. If a double stack could be made with the same profile I'd be all over it but I contend that this is call for a new cartridge and that the 25acp needs to be re-invented to add up to 1/4" in length and up the velocity to around 1250-1300. Magazines could be double stacked in nearly the same width of existing 9mm slim lines and could offer mid size pistol capacities. The trade off would be a slightly longer trigger reach. We could also immediately start calling for a slim line single stack that would hold 7-8 for pocket carry and minimal printing. No but seriously with today's propellants bullets and market I do think there could be a lot to gain from revisiting the 25acp and playing with case length.

I, on the other hand have rarely carried in a OWB holster. My normal is pocket carry.
I have carried a Ruger SP101 .357. S &W 642 , Kel tec PF9. Charter Bulldog .44, and am currently carrying a XD mod2 double stack .45acp.
The heaviest is the XD, but not by much.
I make my own holsters, so I can have the trigger covered while in my pocket, but not be bulky.
I did even carry a Ruger Alaskan .44 mag, for a short time, now that was too heavy for pocket carry.
You can get used to pocket carry, but it does take time, no matter the weight.

About as big as I will go for pocket carry is a Kahr pm, a j frame, or an lcp. Anything bigger and I start walking in circles.

I don’t think I would buy a double stack 238.

Now if Glock came out with a double stack 42, that would be cool.

They actually came out with their double stack before they came out with their single stack, and they could make them here is the U.S. if they wanted, but I'm guessing they've figured out that there is no profit in it. Although the G42 is a softer shooting gun compared to the G25 and G28 due to it being locked breach.

Depends on your pocket. I've a friend who is a serious geek, he always wears baggy cargo pocket pants (both as long and shorts) and carries a bunch electronic geek gear along with his Walter P99. So for him it really is a "pocket pistol".

It works, he met me at the range one time and I was surprised when he pulled it from his pocket. Later he come to one of my BBQs wearing shorts, again he had it in his pocket, but I could only tell because I figured he'd be carrying and knew to look for the moving mass as he moved (much larger than a cell phone etc.) Nobody else seemed to notice, I've some anti-gun friends who'd have freaked out. :)

I forget his name, but there used to be some gun writer/reviewer who used to say "when your body is shaped like a Christmas tree and you wear a poncho you can carry any gun you want!"

The 1911 is a true classic which has recently spawned some miniature cousins in the form of 1911 style pocket autos like the Sig p238 and Kimber Micro lines. But why has it stopped with a steel or alloy framed single stack pistol in 380 and/or 9mm. At this point there are a number of variations of the guns and some are duty driven designs where some are simply beautiful...much like the full sized variety. I don't understand why everybody got to that point then sat back snickering and raking in the money from sales in a highly competitive market. There's one HUGE option on 1911s that is missing in the miniature ponies...leading towards the STI 2011 pattern. Why not go double stack? It's a pocket gun, it's a defensive tool. People like the single stack version and they sell but I keep hearing "only 7 rounds" followed by weeping and glock and Ruger sales among others. Jumping to a double stack by shaving grips and re-engineering the magwell seems like a no brainer. I would seriously consider a p238 at that point. Make it a $600 gun rather than a $500 gun and that's fine by me. People willing to pay for a current p238 or Micro or .380 Browning would easily shell out the extra few bucks to go to 12 or 13 rounds.
John Moses Browning was smart enough to know that a pistol with an exposed hammer has no business being carried in a pocket.....that's why he never designed one.
Not only is there a risk of the hammer snagging on the draw, but cocked & locked means there is plenty of opportunity for lint and other debris to get in there and cause trouble.
