Include ammo when shipping a rifle to someone?

Bought a rifle from a person who lives in another state. He plans on sending it to my FFL for transfer and pickup but the question is:

Can he ship ammo with it? I don't know the rules, if any, on that one. Obviously you can buy ammo on the internet and have it shipped to you but can it be included in a gun purchase and shipped with the firearm? Anybody know?

You cannot ship the ammo with the weapon. I don't know if it's law but I don't know of any company that would allow it. It probably can be packaged seperately and sent togther as a multi-box parcel.

Just have him send the ammo straight to you.

No, the rules for ammo and rifles are different when shipping through a carrier. Also, the rifle can be shipped USPS, but it is illegal to ship ammo that way.

Unless the ammo is rare or unusual, it will likely cost more to ship it than it would to just buy it locally. If it is milsurp, purchase from one of the dealers would be a better alternative.

It would be a bad idea to ship both together.

I'm not an expert in shipping, but as I understand it ammunition must go by ground carrier and have the appropriate markings on the package "ORM-D Cartridge Small Arms" or something of that nature.
