Allrighty !

With the wifes' new pistol inbound from the shipping FFL today ( special thanks to everyone who assisted with that... we're waiting for delivery to get pictures ), thought and energy have been directed towards my piece.

During the discussion process, and after viewing and handling a rifle I loved... Wife disclosed again she wants to hunt with me this year :) That kinda settled the discussion...we need another rifle so she can accompany me through the woods this fall. No pistol for me... no tactical or battle rifle either. Long story short, I loved one similar to this :

http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&h...0&tbnw=182&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0

Wanted big bore (dreams of DG in the future) , it handles like a dream, and I love the loopy lever. The one I handled has a laminate stock with more blue in the blue black, and the fluting on the bolt was perfect.

She'll be taking the .30-30, this piece will be my carry through the woods.

Nuff said.

I need help on a couple of things :

#1. I want this to be the one that starts the trend of "no factory ammo". With that in mind, what i'm looking at for an initial loading is this :

400 GR. SPR JFP*
Hodgdon H4198 .458" 2.540"
46.0g 1854fps 29,500 CUP to 50.5grs 2002 fps39,400 CUP

Staring at 47, ending up at 50grs = 1965-1980 fps at the high end.

Firearm type : Rifle

Bullet Weight 400grs
Ballistic Coefficient .214 ( Speer jacketed FN )
Muzzle Velocity 1980fps
Zero Range 100 yds

Range Muzzle ....50 100 200 300 400 500
Velocity .......1980 1808 1646 1363 1151 1018
Energy ft# ...3482 2902 2406 1650 1176 920
Trajectory (100 yd. zero)
........................ 0.6 0.0 -11.5 -41.9 -98.3 -186.7
Come Up in MOA
........................ -1.1 0.0 5.5 13.3 23.5 35.7

I chose this not because its the heaviest bullet or most powerful charge, but due to the terminal ballistics in the 50-150 yard range.

I am not interested in pointy lever bullets... a 10" difference in drop with compromised terminal impact past 300 yards is not what I'm looking for. If I wanted to reach out past 250...I would take a rem 700 and go that direction.

For those of you who own and shoot 45/70, what do you think of this ?

#2. Fixed optics. I'm going to be persuing a fixed 3-5x forward mounted optic , with MOA dots or lines that will accomodate approximately 10" of drop or rise based on the above shown ballistics.

I know that 10" is alot from a fixed optic with dots. I have considered using a 50 or 150 yard zero and going from there depending on what is available... but thats what I need help with.

Fixed power forward mounted optics are NOT my strong suit... I need some recommendations based on the listed parameters.

Any useful help you could provide would be great, I appreciate it.

read about maximum point blank range (MPBR)

Blarby, that's great!
I loves me some peep sights. If you can see it you can hit it.. dependent upon the cartridge.
As for the 45-70.. I can provide no first-hand advice except to hold on! (and to perhaps cast).
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice !

That scabbard is really handy.........

This might be a tough one to eat though, this rifle.

Gosh its pretty....... But I have plenty of deer weapons. ( Albeit, not like this one....and not in this caliber) And I want a new pistol to use next to the happy wife and her pistol.

Ahhh, the great debate on this years' firearms purchase....if only I could get two !
