Increase Gun Safety with... A Rubber Band?

Good, Bad, ....Who Cares. Personally I would place the rubber bands on guns I knew to be unloaded, not the loaded ones. I don't want a malf because some damn rubber band got in the way. But then again I would never subscribe to this method anyway.

Dr. Science, I recommend getting some chamber flags for your firearms. They are very inexpensive.

Read, read, read...

Not wishing to insult anybody on this HighRoad discussion, mods included, but this is NOT a rule #1 issue. OP stated he checks.

I applaud Dr-Sci for sharing a method he has come up with, which may help someone else who finds themself in his situation. There is nothing inherently unsafe about this method. We should all try to share something innovative with the other members, but when the intent of the message is ignored or twisted, the topic gets sidetracked, the poster gets bashed, and it discourages others from bringing something new or innovative to the table for fear of just what's happened here.

I hang out on this site, just reading mostly, because the discussions seem to be on a higher level than most forums. I am disappointed in the direction this post went. Please, members, read and try to understand before reprimanding.

Whew. Ain't typed that much in a while... all tuckered out.

Great point, and apparently (judging by your username) quite exceptional for you. :D

Thank you, MostlySurly! That is exactly what I intended to do: inform other people of an idea that I had just in case someone thought it was a good idea as well. As I stated and will again, I DO safety check, the bands do not impair proper functioning of the firearms, and the idea is completely safe when coupled with competent firearm handling. I really did not expect to be treated like an incompetent 12 year-old. :/
I did get the occasional good feedback though, such as the holster idea (however, this won't work with long guns) and the idea about the push-out trigger block. I thank those who actually read and were able to post other good ideas and constructive criticism.

So once you've checked it you're OK with putting the barrel to your temple and pulling the trigger?

Who is saying this? I know the poster you are in response to didn't say anything close to that...

You should NEVER put yourself in a position where your only defense is to Fudd up and say "but it is unloaded!" or even worse "but I thought it was unloaded!" in response to questioning of your actions.

What type of safety checks are you doing if you only think it is unloaded? I'm not sure what you do, but if that is the case, then I can tell you, you are doing it wrong.

I'm all in favor of any system a gun owner comes up with to insure firearm safety. In my case it's very simple: There is no such thing as an unloaded gun!

If you were bent on this idea, you could just use a chamber indicator (flag) for all of your unloaded weapons and have all others loaded.

You still should do some type of press check to ensure that the weapon is loaded should you need it. It should be natural.

The OP noted that this was not about indicating that a loaded gun was UN-loaded. Quite the opposite: That a particular gun WAS in fact, not to be "presumed Loaded" but "Actually LOADED!"
Tough luck if you presume this gun is loaded when it is actually NOT! The point of the post is to signal that THIS GUN IS ACTUALLY REALLY loaded. If the rubber band should should fall off, then the gun returns to "just": "Presumed" loaded.
Is this so hard to understand?
Kudos to Dr-Science for bringing this to our attention.
