Increased ammo sales = increased shooting?

I go to a public indoor range every week (except during hunting season) and the owner tells me he has had record numbers of shooters every month since the election.

I know that I live in Graham, Texas, and the nearest place I can buy 9mm is Cabela's. (This pisses me off, it's about a hundred miles of driving, probably more)
I haven't fired my pistol in forever because I don't want to be caught with NO ammo if anything happens. I have about 98 rounds left. I buy it a box or two at a time, because that's all I can afford.

However, my trusty Rem 1100 is about six feet away from my bed. Cabela's was having a Buckshot sale when I made my last trip.
:D

Dang shortage. I was also planning on getting into reloading, but what's the odds I can get ahold of primers in any amount.

So, the shortage means I am buying less ammo, and therefore shooting less.
Except .30-06 ammo, I buy a box pretty regularly... but no more often than I did before the shortage. I do shoot less of it, but that's because I've become a good enough shot.

There is definitely less shooting in my area. The casual shooter (read: do not reload) cannot find ammunition for purchase and are subsequently not shooting their guns.

I still do my thing at the range regularly and all the regulars at IDPA are still coming. The practical rifle crowd whine a lot about ammo prices and are talking about doing a .22 lr match, but their are still lots of new faces, although some people have stated "they are taking a break for the market to cool down." Others talk about being priced out.

The college republican kids at my school didn't hold any of their Second Amendment days that they usually conduct. Definitely less shooting.

No whining here.

Learning to reload yes someday, there are locals who might do a bit of teaching in these parts.

PLENTY of ammo is availible.

Just need a internet, a computer and a list of your favorite online retailers with a bank card and yer good to go. No stress, no worries no problem.

Most of you got one thing right, shoot some, save some.

I haven't seen more shooters at the ranges. Of course, I don't go as often as I used to b/c of the price increases & ammo shortages. I don't want to blow through my stash without being able to replace it. I think I am done hoarding for a bit though. I passed ona few WWB value packs of .40 S&W today at Wal Mart. Maybe I should have picked em up, but whatever. I have over 1k rounds of .40 left.

I shoot less, but still buy what I was originally, every month. But I will go back soon to shooting regularly.

TBS, my range here in Vegas seems to be about the same.

So I guess, I'm a hoarder, but I've been that way for years, so I get a free pass.:neener:

THe indoor range near my work that i would go to on occasion is now really busy.

Use to be you could walk in after work and they'd always have a couple lanes open. Now you need to make an appointment.

luckily i decided to get into reloading in November and was able to get healthy supplies of primers and powder before everything disappeared.

Fewer shooters are at my range.

I stock pile, but I also shoot at least once a week these days. Three times this week.

I had a pretty good supply of everything I shoot except .223 that was purchased back in the days of $7.50/box for handgun range ammo. I am just slightly slowing down to try to make it lasts. I am gambling that at some point before the situation gets a lot worse it will temporarily get better and I can stock up again.

So personally, I am not participating in the buying frenzy at all for either reason.

It's down, way down. All of my buddies can't shoot because they can't get ammo, same with myself. I've had an order with Cabela's that I placed in March that's been back ordered again until June. No one in town has any. I'd shoot quite a bit if I could ever get ammo.

Personally.

In Massachusetts at my range I've noticed a 50% increase in traffic. I go on lunch and had the place to myself half the time, maybe 1-2 other folks the rest of the week.

Now having it alone is rare - and there are usually 2-4 other shooters.

It's good to see people shooting. It's good to see people buying ammunition, personally I don't buy more than I could realistically use within the time frame it would take me to replace it - then plus a little more for practical defensive need (the what if).

Personally I am not shooting more quantity or frequently than I did 2 years ago...about the same actually. But I do notice more new faces...activity is up.

I wonder if anyone had 4 range rats picking up hot fresh falling brass being ejected past my shoulder as I did? When I finished and stepped back from the line, I had 4 happy rats with fresh brass (Mine...) and not one on the floor.

I don't know where you shop online, but many places are back ordered on ammo. When you are told there is a 6-8 week backlog, it tends to discourage the average consumer. Plus when you add up shipping charges, in order to make the price anywhere near retail, you have to order a large amount.

I have seen much less people at my range. You can't shoot what you don't have. My wife has taken to firing my 9mm because .38 special is very hard to find. I saw one guy bring his two kids, maybe 13 or 15 years old. They stayed maybe 40 minutes (on two lanes, and they weren't going anywhere quickly). The price and lack of ammo is hurting the average shooter, and those are the people that use the range the most.

Yeah, I just went online and bought a dozen boxes of soldout and a case of backorder.

I haven't bought ammo in 6 or 8 months and haven't shot much at all. I mean less than a box.

I've heard our domestic producers of ammo are running full speed and that new foreign made ammo is virtually unavailable.

What I do I during morning coffee visit each of the internet vendors starting with Cabelas and work down the list. I have specific ammuntion in mind.

Once I see one in stock, I buy it.

In the evening, I patrol the internet again. Most of the time some of the vendors update the website to show in stock right that moment and I make the buy. Round and round.

I dont back order. It has to be in stock, ship that day or forget it. Patience when I shoot a ration designed to be resupplied at a steady rate every 6 months to a year. The last time I needed about 7 weeks to find any kind of .45 ACP and all they had were 4. So... I keep slowly adding through the months. Again, Im a patient man. It usually updates very late at night on weekends.

Combine that with careful visits to the shops in my area when the trucks are due tends to yeild results.... slowly and surely.

The pawnshops in my area are buried in hand reloads in sandwitch bags all kinds of calibers. The stuff have been sitting there sooo long the bags have become yellow with age. Go figure.

Last time I posted here I mentioned lower shooter numbers at my range. Now, its practically abandoned. Last time I was shooting, I was pretty much the only shooter with any ammo that wasn't .22LR. Things are getting tough in this neck of the woods, my own supply is dwindling. Looks like I'm gonna have to call on some favors to find any suitable ammo for the next few months.

My procedure is getting pretty s.o.p.

1. Call Walmart at 7:30am to see if any came in overnight. If yes, get there asap
2. Call Academy sports at 8:30(opens at 9) for the same reasons, and if yes, get there asap.
3. Call Cabela's at 9pm sharp! If they have any, I IMMEDIATELY reserve their limit(2 boxes) and go up there at my leisure(or by 12 noon, 'cause that's when I loose my reservation). Nice thing about them, is that they WILL hold your ammo for you.
4. Start checking the internet resources. Depending on the b/o wait, I'll order that has less than a 4 week waiting period.

So far, I've done ok. I manage to keep 4 boxes in the house, and go to range weekly, but only shoot 1 box per visit.

very little shooting going on in my area since the election. except for myself. i have not let this change my shooting habbits except for finding something to shoot. of course, i dont shoot 500 rounds a week either. i can only imagine how full of ammo the ammo horders basements are now. i am thinking about two feet deep, all the way around!

I cannot imagine a Nation full of ammuntion.

Is it possible that a few years from now some of the ammuntion is going to go bad and cause problems with Failure to fire etc at the ranges?

I dont know about basements filled all the way round. Ive precisely two boxes, one of which is only 1/3 full and will take months to fill up. Unless I happen to hit one of the local shops at the right time and clean thier shelf. (Leaving a few for the next fella)

I was in a wally mart a few days ago and they had some .223's I think that is what they were called and some other rifle rounds. But it's a sad, lonely, empty, neglected part of the store with a old note scotched taped to the shelf counter... due to ammo we will restrict X boxes per blah....

They dont have anything that I want anyway... so it's a moot.

What IS interesting is the availible of .40 Handgun rounds. Sometimes pallets of the stuff stacked as high as a man can stand to see it. No one wants em.

I would not be typical, new to hand guns and new to this area.

Joined gun club and am lucky to be able to go shoot (indoor or outdoor) when I want, which is mornings. Very seldom is anyone else shooting.

Club members tell me the outdoor range is busy before and during hunting seasons. Club supports outdoor target shooting in summer with moderate attendance I am told.

Club membership is increasing and nearing a cut-off.

I can't make a lot of sense out of all of this.

Ammo is very difficult to obtain in cal's I want (38 Spec & 357). I am trying to obtain enough (1000 rounds) for a tactical class coming up. Counter guys tell me its off the shelf as fast as it comes it. One store told me they were sold out of hunting ammo 8 weeks ago. They increased this years order for hunting by 20% and it was gone fast. Another store told me that Federal has notified dealers that they are cutting back to one shift at the factory. Doesn't make much sense to me since they sell it as fast as they can make it.

Some of this madness is probably from the political situation, some from stockpiling, some from new gun owners and shooters and some from greed.
