Indecisiveness: I Don't Know What to Buy Next!

I'm not sure where I want to go next with my collection. I haven't bought a new gun in months, due in part to a lack of funds, but also to indecision and lack of time. I can't figure out what direction to go next, so I thought I'd get some fresh perspective.

My 'collection' is pretty pedestrian by THR standards, but I've got most of my major needs covered. I might get into hunting in the future, but I'm not really into it right now, so that's not a big factor. I shoot clays only occasionally, and the Wingmaster works for that. Mostly looking for HD/SD, range fun, and stuff I just "need" :)D).

Here's where I'm at right now:

Long Guns:

• Remington 870 Wingmaster (12 Ga)
• Remington 870 HD (12 Ga)
• Stevens 520 (12 Ga)

• Remington 552 Speedmaster (.22 Short, Long and Long Rifle)
• Marlin Model 60 (.22LR)
• Marlin Model 981T (.22WMR)

• Smith & Wesson M&P15X (16" AR-15 w/EoTech)

Hand Guns:

• Browning Buckmark (.22LR)

• Ruger LCP (.380 ACP)

• Smith & Wesson Sigma 9VE (9mm)
• Kahr PM9 (9mm)
• Glock 26 (9mm)
• Glock 19 (9mm)

• Smith & Wesson 340PD (.357 Mag)
• Ruger SP101 (.357 Mag)
• Smith & Wesson 586 (.357 Mag)

• Springfield Armory GI 1911 (.45 ACP)
• Sig Sauer P220 (.45 ACP)


Most of what I have, I've either inherited or I really like, and would prefer not to lose any of it just to fund something new. I reload for all centerfire calibers except 12 gauge (which I don't shoot enough of to justify the time and cost).

So, what to do next? Some ideas I've had:

• Carry .45 (Kahr or Glock perhaps?)

• Second AR-15 (It is an election year, and I really like AR-15's.)

• Large caliber centerfire rifle (Seems like a hole in my collection. 700 SPS?)

• NFA stuff? (Suppressor for my Buckmark? SBS or SBR?)

• Progressive Reloader? (I'm not a high-volume shooter, but single-stage does get old sometimes)

• Ammo (I have ‘enough’ - a few hundred per caliber - but not as much as I really should)


Maybe there's something I'm not thinking of. I don't have a lot of time or money, so I've got to pick a direction and stick with it, and that's probably all the 'gun money' I'll have for this year. I'll be lucky if I can spend $1000 on guns this year. I wish I could do it all, but I just can't. If I'm leaning toward anything, I'd say it's probably toward another AR-15.

So, given all that, what would you do? Thanks in advance.
 
Yep you have a hole in the centerfire rifle dept. but other than that you are well covered and I find myself feeling a bit jealous but that will pass.... To fill your "hole" and to satisfy that inkling for another AR consider getting one chambered in 6.8spcII or maybe .458socom that'll give you another AR and it will be able to hunt any medium size and some large game in N.A. at a reasonable range. There are other hunting grade calibers in the AR platform if either of the above mentioned aren't to your liking. hope this helps.
 
I would go with a bolt rifle in a common centerfire caliber (.308, .30-06, .270, etc.)

This ^. Also, if it was me, I would think about a .22 revolver of some sort maybe an SP101 or something similar. I don't see any lever guns on that list either. ;)
 
7.62x39 in either an AK, SKS, or AR upper. Great short range ( 150yds) hunting round IMO and you can buy all the above for $300 to $500.

I to like the 6.8 but at 80 plus cents a round it is not something I would own unless I reloaded for it.

No one can argue with having a good 308 or 30.06 it just depends on how much you are going to be shooting with your new weapon?? I ain't poor 'yet' I find myself shooting .22 AR rifles and pistols more and more just because of the cost of my heavier calibers. But I am getting cheap in my old age and my wife seems to really only like popping the .22s so "Oh well"!

Pig hunting is 223 or 7.62x39 but rarely is there more than 20 or so rounds fired.
 
A lever gun is always a good idea and Mossberg's new 464spx (if you haven't seen it you should) kills two birds with one stone it's an AR with a lever.
 
I would suggest one of the following:

Sig 229 .40 S&W (No rail)
Ruger GP100 .357 (4" barrel)
S&W 686 .357 (4" barrel)
More 1911's (Can never have enough 1911's)
Winchester 94 30-30 (Classic)
Marlin lever action (Too many to list and available in big calibers)
Centerfire .308 Winchester rifle (Too many to list)

Any or all of the above would be a good choice.

What about the adding on to your Glocks? I think you could pick up a barrel and magazine to make your 9MM in to a 40 S&W. I know you can convert a 27 from a 40 S&W to a 9MM or a 357 Sig. This would only run about $200 and leave cash available for other things. I like snubbies too. So much to do, and so little time! (& money)
 
You could have a lot of fun with a Pistol Caliber Carbine either in lever action or auto-loading.

Depends on your budget but you could add a Mosin Nagant, SKS and/or AK.

I'd strongly consider a mini-14 or mini-30.

How about a Kel Tec PMR 30, RFB or KSG?
 
YES!....the Minis are great guns with tons of aftermarket support. imo everyone should have a Ruger Mini
 
Don't buy anything. If nothing is catching your eye, stash the money away until something does. Go shooting with friends and try their different things. Think about what you want to do, be it hunting, competition, long range, plinking, just owning a pile of guns, whatever and see where that takes you.
 
Can you say "Black Powder"? :) Seriously, that's a fine collection of firearms you have. But when my shooting became a bit, well, stagnant, I began foolin' around with BP revolvers and longarms, and it added an important dimension to my shooting. The black powder folk here at THR are a fount of information, and can certainly point you in the right direction.
 
Thank you for your opinions. Lots of interesting ideas.

I've toyed with the idea of a levergun in the past, but it doesn't fill any kind of 'niche' for me that I can think of. If I'm going to get another centerfire rifle, it seems that another AR or a .308 bolt gun would make more sense. I'll buy more 'just for fun' guns when I'm older or better off financially. Right now, I'd rather focus on things I can at least pretend that I need.

And if I were to get a levergun, it certainly wouldn't be that Mossberg abomination. I trust that was a joke!

I think the closer we get to the election, the more likely I am to nervously buy another AR. Call me paranoid, that's fine. I am, a little.

But then again, a .308 bolt gun, a suppressor for my .22, more ammo... it all sounds like stuff I need! I can come up with good arguments in favor of any of them. I've been doing the 'gun' thing for a few years now, and this is the first time I've been like this. I've always known exactly what I want, and I don't understand why I'm sitting here scratching my head over this.

Maybe what I really need is a second job. :(
 
Buckeye, how about getting yourself set up for reloading? Saves a lot of money.
I can agree with sleazy. I think my 1858 is my favorite.
 
Shinbone, I do reload (single-stage). As per my original post, I'm not sure if I'm a high-volume enough shooter to justify a progressive system. If I do go that route, it will be the Hornady progressive, since just about all of my reloading equipment is Hornady already.

shuvelrider, that is something for me to think about too. I've always told myself that 'someday' I'll get a nice set of milsurps. I'll probably fart around until they cost three times what they do now.

I agree with the response (above). Normally I would recommend keeping either the cartridge size reasonably common and/or the manual or arms common but there's nothing of the sort in this collection.
So I'd plug the 'AR' and rifle collection hole with an FNH SCAR 'Heavy' i.e. the 17S in 7.62x51.
On the handgun, missing are my two favorite initials: H&K. But that's just me I suppose.

Aint no collection complete with an assortmant of 44 mags...a few Rugers and Smiths...its a great caliber to reload too...
 
You have a nice group of guns. Most of the suggestions have been good but let me put in my 2 cents.

A semi auto 12 gauge for clays and skeet. Buy a nice one and it will last a life time.

A 6.8 SPC upper for your AR15.

A big bore revolver.
 
I like how you've got several choices in most all your guns in each caliber other than the .380 & the AR. I'm a big believer in duplication in myself. As the saying goes, "two is one, one is none."

With the coming election I think it'd be a darn good idea to get a second AR, maybe a longer barreled one with a scope. I have a Rock River national match flattop with a Tijicon 3-9x mildot scope that is one of my absolute favorite guns. Amazingly accurate, it's a terrific all around rifle and I highly recommend something similar.

Manny - I like that idea for an AR. I can't decide if I want to go the route you did, or get a 'high-end' patrol carbine (Colt, DD, etc.) I definitely try to keep multiple guns in each caliber. No sense in having all that ammo laying around if one breaks.

Russ - Is 6.8 here to stay? I'm not well-read on the non-5.56 AR stuff, but it seems that a lot of those calibers come on the scene only to fade away a short time later.

As far as .44 Mag - I will do that someday. I'm sure it's a fun cartridge and great for a reloader, but for my situation, it's not terribly practical. I live in Ohio. The only 4-legged animals bigger than me are in cages.
