There is a very good chance that I will be moving to Indiana from Illinois in the near future. Having said that, I have a question regarding the Indiana CCW permit that I hope someone can help me with.

Basically, I have reviewed the information at packing.org and the official Indiana webpage and am a little confused with regard to the length of residency requirement. Among other things, Indiana code section IC 35-47-2-3 ( c) states that “The officer to whom the application is made shall ascertain the applicant's name, full address, length of residence in the community…” The page can be viewed here: http://www.ai.org/legislative/ic/code/title35/ar47/ch2.html

I cannot seem to find anything else that discusses how long one must be a resident of the state before applying for the permit. If it makes any difference, I am currently looking at apartments in the Dyer, St. John, Schererville area. Any bits of information or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Get a Pennsylvania non-resident CCW now and it will be good untill you have established your resident status in Indiana. You must get it before you move from Illinois, Pennsylvania only issues to residents of states that do not have CCW unless you have one from your state of residence. I think it will remain in effect while you make the transition. Just to be sure, call the Centre county sheriffs office and ask, I don't remember the number but it is on packing.org. The people in their office have been courtious and helpfull to me when I had questions. Jim.

Thanks for the information. I did a search before posting and saw information on the Pennsylvania non-resident CCW come up a few times. It is a good idea, but I am not sure if it is suited to my situation. Once I make the move I will probably go about getting a new driver's license, voter registration card, etc. with in a month. This will give me enough time to make sure everything is ok and will provide me with adequate proof of residency info (bank statements at new address, paycheck stubs, etc.) to satisfy the BMV. Once this happens and I get an Indiana driver's license, I would not want to risk having an out of state CCW made out to an address that does not match the license.

I plan to be out in the area this weekend. If I find an adequate place, maybe I will stop by the town's police department and ask them directly.

Matthew, once you get here and get the water and phone turned on, go register to vote. Ring up the PD and see what internal red tape requirements they have. They may want to show a light bill or similar. Down here I have never been asked for anything, but since they know me at my PD it may be different.

Be advised, while Indiana recognizes the license to carry of all other states and all foreign countries, the foreign license is NOT valid if the person is an Indiana resident. While having licenses from other states is a solid idea (especially Florida), if you live here it is NOT valid in Indiana.

Here's how the process works:

"Dammit, boy, what do you want now?"
"I need an application for a License to Carry a Handgun, please."
"Dammit, boy, I reckon you got your $10 and $15 money orders there now?"
"Yes, right here."
"Dammit, boy, fill out this here application now and get it back here and then we'll send it down to Indy and you'll get your little pink card now."

4 to 6 weeks (my last one came back in 2) later you'll have your LTCH and you can thumb your nose at King Daley and Emperor Blojo. :D

Thanks for all the responses. I had some free time, so I called the Dyer police department on my lunch break. The officer said pretty much what you said El Tejon. She told me to get driver's liscense and then stop by to fill out the paperwork. She also said that there is no length of residency requirement.

And allow me to welcome you to our wonderful state, I am sure you will love it here.
What area of the state are you moving to?

Welcome to Indiana, if you do not have a gun, one will be issued to you. Just kidding, it's a great state, and one of the gun friendliest around. If you like IPSC or IDPA, their everywhere. :)

"Dammit, boy, fill out this here application now and get it back here and then we'll send it down to Indy and you'll get your little pink card now."

Is that how they do it in Lafayette? They left out all the dammits when I got mine in West Lafayette. :)

Titus, dammit, boy, I done tole you twicet that it's just Tejonese (e.g. Texas=Tejas; Southerners always say "I say, I say"; wadah=water in Bawwwsten, etc.). I dare to have fun on the Errornet. :D

Popeye, no, just a friendly reminder to register to vote! :D We need pro-gun votes in Lake County don't you know, dammit, boy. :D
