Glock and it's giveaways

Now if we could get our government to GIVE back, we'd have something.

Kidding aside, I think this is a classic marketing ploy. Sidearms worn by the LEOs and military folks are regarded as better simply because I know as a consumer that LE agencies and armed forces do a lot of evaluation work before they agree to anything from their contractors, freebies or not.

This is one of the main reasons I like the EAA witness and was a big factor in my search for a 10mm gun.

Glock also gets to claim that the Glock .40 is THE Official side-arm of the Indiana State Police. Also, they will probably make at least some profit from the parts and repairs down the road.

I know that SIG and S&W have done the exact same thing with their LE marketing.

All companies do it. Any company that is an Olympic sponsor touts themselves as the "official provider of X to the Olympics."

Right now, Sigarms is touting the ICE contract. HK does the same, even though Sig is providing the majority of pistols under the contract.

Glock got market share by selling weapons to LE agencies cheap, and then convincing the public that if NASA, Nassau County, etc., is using them, it must be great. Colt did the same with the 1911 ("official sidearm of the US military", Beretta did it with the 92 ("official sidearm of the US military"), SigSauer did it with the 226 ("official weapon of the SEALs"), and HS Precision does it with their rifles ("own the same rifle the FBI snipers use.")

Glock took it one step further by providing cheap replacements to the cops and selling the used ones. Not a bad plan, since that's where the high cap Glock mags we were buying during the ban came from.

All in all, capitalism at its best. They are providing a service that we want, at a price that the market will bear, and making money at it.

HK got the bigger "half" of the contract (and also the 357 SIG portion of it).

Really? First I've heard of that. My understanding was that although both got the contract, Sig was the only one that was delivering pistols. Learn something new everyday.

Absolutely. Dig out a 2000 Glock Annual. That's exactly what they did with my agency. We had been strictly S&W for 32 yrs. We were the first agency to go to autos and to the 9mm in 1968. So when Glock got the bid in 1999 and took the S&W market it was quite the coup. Not quite to the level as the Glock Annual made it out to be in the Glock Annual tho. They neglected to mention that Sig actually came out #1 in our tests, S&W was #2, with Glock #3. They weren't all that far apart but Glock wasn't #1. Glock got the contract by substantially underbidding the other 2.

And this = $$$ is the main reason why so many Leo's carry Glocks.

At least the powers that be could have went with the model 20 or 21, i mean if your going to be saddled with a Glock.....
