An Indiana woman is in critical condition after being shot by Michigan state police inside a store in Jackson County.

Troopers responded to a call Friday morning Buddy's Mini-Mart in Parma, where they saw a woman inside with a gun, according to a report released by state police.

When police told the 36-year-old South Bend, Indiana woman to drop the weapon, she pointed it at a man standing nearby and a trooper shot her, state police said.

The woman, who was not identified, is in critical but stable condition at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported.

State police would not say why the woman brandished a handgun inside the store. The store is off Interstate 94 and is a popular stop for travelers.

State police are continuing to investigate with assistance from the Blackman Township Public Safety and Concord police departments.
