I absolutely love my Ruger PC9, but it ain't exactly lightweight and I could of gotten 2 Hi-points and good amount of ammo for it's price. While My PC9 has been utterly reliable, so has my Hi-point. And it was just as, if not more, accurate.
The Kel-Tec just didn't fit me right, but I didn't have any reliabilty problems (@500rds) before I sold it off. Neat little rifle, though.
I've shot both the Hipoint and the Keltec a lot and you can't go wrong with either, however let me point out that the Hipoint is limited to single stack mags. The Keltec will take double stack high caps, and can be ordered with a compatible magwell for a lot of pistols (Glock 17, Glock 19, S&W 59, Beretta 92, SIG 226 in 9mm). Therefore my 9mm Sub2K rides with 20 rounders that also fit my sidearm.
You can get a Thompson/Center Contender and order a Custom Shop barrel in 9mm. All T/C Arms pistols, rifles and carbines have a 1" at 100 yards accuracy guarantee. Also, they are all life-time warranted.
Hard to beat this deal. That they are single-shot to me is an credit, not a detriment. Single-shot screams confidence in one's shooting ability.
The Hi-Point firearms are definetly not the most AP {Aesthetically Pleasing} ones out there [read as "Man, that is one pig-butt-ugly gun!"].
However, the are inexpensive, reasonably accurate, and will go Bang! on request every time. Plus, Hi-Point has a ilfetime warranty, and quick repair times if you DO manage to break one.
I don't own a Hi-Point, but I have shot most of their offerings at some time over the last 5 years or so. Ugly, but they work.
you can still find the discontinued marlin camp 9 try a search at gunsamerica.com. They look more traditional (wood stock) and are quite accurate. A quick look at the above site I found one said to be 96% for less than a meg-tech conversion.
Definitely the kel-tec, I'd say. Goes right in the backpack, 16" when folded. Also EXTREMELY accurate, at least mine is.
Last thing you want on a long, long, long hike is a full-sized rifle like the Marlin relentlessly bumping against your shoulder, side, rear, etc... and stowing it in the backpack doesn't advertise you have one.
