inexpensive "truck" rifle: suggestions?

Oh yeah. If you have one of them newfangled "trucks" with leather seats and a $35,000 price tag, you should consider a fine double rifle instead. I'd like to have one. Spartan (Izhmash imported by Remington) makes a cheaper double rifle, but it's not THAT cheap, so might as well get one of these.

My recommendation would be a used bolt action, chambered in a caliber that will suit the intended use.

My truck gun, Mosin-Nagant M44. $79.99 at Big5 sporting goods. And yes, I do take every opportunity to post this picture :)

Beat me to it. Best be going. Compact. Hard hitting. Accurate. Cheap enough to buy several should one get messed up/destroyed/stolen etc. And it's not as scary to the "sheeple".

I woudl choose something that is less likely to create a LEO problem as the AR's and AK's might. I lean toward a solid lever action rifle in 30-30. Marlin chambers their rifles in larger calibers if that is your thing. Again... low profile gun that is designed for sporting purposes. They all shoot, but some give other impressions when you're pulled up to the local 7-11 or liquor store after work.

Depends on where you are. Here in michigan you can't have a "truck gun". However, Michigan defines any rifle with stock folded between 26" and 30" as a pistol. And looky here, I have a permit that says I can conceal a pistol on me or in my truck. So... Bulgarian folding stock AK74 with loaded thirties sit in the truck. That'll do. Otherwise I would have to concure with a Mosin M38 or M44.

Hi there,

In my area of the country where it is mostly flat with heavy thicket and forest, I would opt for a Marlin 336 lever 30/30 with a decent sling and open sights.

A "new" unissued Yugo SKS from J&G was $161 and change, delivered, with my C&R. Best deal yet. It's heavier and longer than a regular SKS, but recoil, already mild, is almost non existant.
If looks are what makes you worry, paint the stock a nice pink, and add a BIG yellow daisy to each side!:p Then the sheeple will think you are Flower Power!:neener:
Seriously, the Yugo SKS is the greatest bargain going...if you don't mind cleaning off cosmo.

if you are trying to save money, buy a used Marlin 336 Lever action in 30-30. You can usually find one for around $200.

If you want to spend a little more, get a Marlin 336 lever action in 30-30 in Stainless Steel . A new one will cost around $450.

I'm not into rifles myself, but if I wanted one for a truck, I'd either get a shotgun or one of those Keltec Folding 9mm carbines.

Cheap Truck Gun...

I'm voting for a lever action 30/30 too.A second choice would be a mil-surp bolt action in your favorite caliber.tom.

For years I kept a 30-30 in my pickup. Now more often than not it's a scoped K31 or a single shot Mauser 98 rebarreled to 30-40 Krag. Iron sights don't seem as viable as they did years ago.....Essex

+1 on the Mosin

I carry an M38 behind the seat, along with a 20 gauge single shot when upland bird season is open. My M38 was 69.99 at Big5. If the first shot doesn't hit what you are aiming for the thunder and lightning will probably scare them off.

I vote SKS --for goblins its faster to shoot and reload than a lever action, holds more ammo in the magazine and imho better able to stand abuse
That said, a Marlin in 30-30 is a good second choice
