Southeast Minnesota. Beautiful bluff country.
Im looking for a rifle that has inexpensive and plentiful ammunition. Suitable to reach out to 100yds at the range. And would basically be used for range and shtf gun. Im not going to hunt with it, but don't want a .22. Semi auto is preferred, but will consider a pump or lever action. I've looked at the mini 14 tactical and like that. But otherwise not sure what else there is. AR's are outta my price range. A marlin lever action would be nice but not sure what caliber is not to expensive to shoot. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

go to a gunshow and find someone who has a lot of rifles, pick up an sks and begin to haggle em down. You can get them for about 230 now if you know how to haggle. I have 3 sks, and they are the best for what you need in a modest price range.

Depends on what you're trying to do. Both my AKs will hold 4” groups at 100 yards. Is that small enough for you?

Remember too, you need a rifle, mags, and ammo. A Min-14 or Mini-30 may look cheap until you factor in the cost of factory mags. Right now 7.62x39 is going for around $200-$220 per thousand, or about ½ the price of .223.

Check gun-deals.com for prices on rifles and ammo. Good hunting. BSW

+1 on the AR15! You can buy an AR for the same price as Mini 14! There are so many upgrades and gear you can get for an AR. They are fun to shoot too!

Have fun with your new purchase!

Thanks for all the info. I checked out the remingtons, and really like the idea of those. I love my 870. I didn't even know they made those. The mini 14 is nice but accuracy suffers. I have held the marlin 1894c, it was nice but finding pistol ammo sucks around here. And when you do it's expensive. I might look around and find the remington in the store and try one on for size. Thanks again.

In my opinion the generic SKS has better ergonomics than an "AK clone" and is more comfortable, having a very modest recoil.

The full-length WW2 Lee-Enfield (.303) and Mini 30 are certainly more enjoyable to shoot than a buddy's standard WASR "AK clone" with the folding stock, and even my two "Jungle Carbines" (#5) with a cheap recoil pad are preferable.
