Hi all - I did a search which yield some info on this particular gun, but not precisely what I was looking for. So I'm hoping your collective knowledge have gathered more data since the last thread on this gun was created.

I'm eyeing a Astra Cadix 38SPL, 2" for $100+ bucks (I'm looking for an affordable, used 38spl snubbie for CCW and/or BUG.) The gun looks in decent/ok shape, but one never knows until it gets inspected (or fired )

What is the current consensus of past/present users of such a gun? Most importantly, can this gun handle +P ammo? If not, what type of ammo would be best recommended for it?

I don't intend it for home defense (I already have a S&W model 10 RHKP with 130g +P JHP for that), but for CCW using similar ammo platform if possible.

Thanks.

Ive always heard pretty good things about the astra guns and at $100 I would grab it quick if it locks up tight. I've always wanted one of their 5 shot guns with a longer barrel. In .38 it would be a great hiking gun. I actually prefer to use .38s on rabbits after loosing one with a body shot.

I don't see these come up for sale locally but they've always interested me.

Another question - safety

Regarding this gun, given its age, is this one of those where it is recommended to have a chamber empty to avoid accidental discharge in case of the hammer being struck accidentally (say, where it be to be dropped/fall to the floor)?

First, I would stick to standard ammo in that gun.

IIRC those guns do have a transfer bar safety, so should be safe to carry fully loaded.

Note though, that the company is out of business and the Cadix was not imported in large quantities, so parts and service may be hard to come by if anything goes wrong.

Got it. Yeah, the lack of spare parts will be a problem when it breaks. I do hope that it doesn't happen at least until I have enough to get a NIB snub replacement. Then I'll put it in honorable, well-deserve retirement as a family heirloom to pass to my kids when they grow up :)
