I saw a Savage 93R17 BSEV for sale locally and really liked the looks of it a lot.
This one

The one for sale locally is advertised as NIB but it's from a guy who purchased it. Claims it comes with the box, original receipt, and mounts. I'm not to crazy about buying one NIB from a individual like that unless it's for a super price. To me it's basically used even if he hasn't shot it. I'd much rather purchase from a dealer. Although, I've never seen one at a dealer. What's a fair price to pay for one from a dealer? Also what would be considered a great price for one being NIB from a seller. What's average?

Now that I've asked about the price it brings me down to my questions about the gun. Does anyone have one? While I really like the looks of it I'm just not sure I want a .17 HMR that costs this much when I can go to Walmart and get a nice heavy barrel Marlin for $200 or so. If it was a center fire I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Does anyone make a center fire rifle with a barrel and stock similar to this?

Does anyone have one of these? What kind of accuracy can you expect from it? Is this the gun to get or are you just as well off with a $200 Marlin one? I really like how the gun looks with the stock and barrel but I've not really wanted a .17HMR and I really don't want to pay anywhere near that price for one. So I'm just wondering if there is something making this one worth the price or if it's just all looks?

I have one with a thumb hole laminate stock and heavy stainless barrel and it is a real shooter. The price was about $320 a few years ago. I like it a lot but very seldom do I shoot it because I can't reload 17 HMR and I have couple. 10/22's for plinking.

I can get that for $479 locally.

I had the lesser version the 93BTV version and the gun is a very solid shooter.
But with the gun your looking at you can get the same performance with the $250 93FV and your just paying for looks and stock. Nothing wrong with that i love the looks of that gun and i wanted it over my BTV. Everything is identical mechanically on a $200 bull barrel Savage as a $500 Savage, Its just the extra looks your paying for.

I don't own my .17 anymore either, I traded mine in for a great CZ Ultra Lux .22lr. Its just as accurate with mid priced ammo $3-$4 for 50 rounds.
I to got to the point i didn't shoot mine as much and really bored with the .17hmr ammo as there is only less than 10 choices on the market, Not a good selection at all.

But the .17hmr is a great round for what its designed for, Hunting. Plinking get a .22lr.
BTW Savage makes great quality guns, Ive seen a few lower end Marlins and wasn't impressed. But the 60 is a classic that will always be in demand.

I have a 93 R17 In BTV configuration and is a solid < MOA gun . Out of the box , it will out-shoot all but the best sharpshooters . Nice guns , but when you can roll your own 223 for nearly the same price as a round of .17 HMR , it gets tougher to plink with . Great guns with a super trigger , and when I take a newby to the range with me , its usually what I put in their hands first to instill confidence . Target example from my bone stock unit at 100 m .5 moa .

I also have the thumbhole version, and it's relatively new. I've only put about 250 rounds through it, but it seems to have real potential. At 50 yards I'm putting shots basically through the same hole - very tight groups. When I've run out to 100 yards, I'm seeing a little over 1", but it was weird groupings. I think I had a wind gust issue because I'd get 3 or 4 shots touching and then one maybe an inch out, in a varying direction.

Anyway, I think they're very capable rifles. I've heard of people getting one that doesn't group well, but that seems a rarity. Just remember that it's not a $2,000 Sako and you'll be happy. :) I like mine - it's a good compromise between a .22LR and a centerfire. For me, it's a plus because I can't reload for it... I just don't need to get into loading for another caliber!

You should definitely check out what's being said over on the Rimfire Central forum. Lots of good Savage info there. (http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php)

Here's mine:

I have the FV version little cheaper but a good shooter, the stock comb could be a little higher.
25 shots back to back 100 yds.
