Inherited Ruger

SuperNaut PM sent back to ya. I also found several grips on gunbroker that will fit your gun. I sent the auction # to you. Those grips look better than mine. Your choice.

My gun is also getting the cool plum color to the frame. There ain't no way I would reblue or plate my gun.

I also have a security six made in 1986 IIRC and there is some differences between the two models. The newer gun has a heavier weight barrel and the pivot pin for the thumb latch is larger in diameter. I replaced the pivot on my 150 series gun as it was a little bent. That may have been a problem and ruger beefed them up on newer guns.

Except for the grip I prefer the 150 series gun as it is a little lighter and is like a model 15 S&W but with the ability to shoot 357 ammo. Just a darn good all around pistola.

Back when I started police work in 1980 I bought a Security Six and was lambasted by the S&W fanboys quite a bit. It shot very well, but I soon traded it out for a S&W 686..Now, Security Sixes and especially Speed Sixes are universally appreciated as being fine revolvers in their own right and I would take a GP100 over a new S&W 357 any day of the week..

The 686 is a great revolver, especially the ones made in the 80s. I would take the 686 over the GP-100 any day, but the Security-Six is my favorite. In a self defense situation a light barrel revolver will pick up on moving targets faster than a heavy barrel, but once you're on target, you're probably better off with a heavier barrel. But I like the barrels on the Security-Six and the S&W 66 much better than heavy barrels.

The Security-Six frame is better designed than the GP-100 (inset) in my view in
that it is better balanced.

I finally found some grips that fit, unfortunately they are slick pearl grips. However I remembered seeing a trick from the huge revolver pic thread (amazing thread btw) and I used a section of bicycle tube on the grip. It works great!

The early Ruger Security-Six is an astounding gun, but the first models were turn-offs for so many people because of the grip angle. Ruger's next iteration of the gun fixed the grip angle, but when full load magnum rounds were used, the guns still wanted to jump out of one's hands! The .38 rounds were fine. Normally I wouldn't ever plate a gun with most of its blue intact, but I seem to recall on the OP's gun was so worn on the outside that I'd plate it any day. Guns that are shooters need some protection and hard chrome plating effectively stops wear in its tracks -- in the parts, the barrel, plus it protects against corrosion.

Ruger never had great bluing, but the first guns had the beautiful plum look that later models lacked. Pythons had a gorgeous blue, but for some reason Colt thought it would look cool to use the plum color for the cylinder release.

SuperNaut's Ruger is beautiful, but I like the mother-of-pimp grips on it, especially with the bike tube cut-out. The natural wear gives it a look you just can't buy. The fact remains, I think the S&W 686 and Ruger Security-Six are the best production .357s ever made, but for different reasons.

The more I shoot it, and as it becomes more mine and less "grandpa's gun," the less I want to refinish it. Since it isn't corroding, and it is a shooter not a looker, I think I'm going to leave the finish as it is.

Last night on a whim I stuck a rubber o-ring under the bike tube to give it a little ridge for a finger groove and it felt great. The greybeards were on to something with this little bike-tube hack, it really works.

I think it looks great! Id rather have a piece with years worth of honest wear and character, than one that looks like new.

I inherited a couple of tools from my dad, too. No matter how long I have them or how much I use them...I dont think I'll ever stop referring to them as "Dads".

SuperNaut ,

Could you please repost the image of your Ruger? I think that the original has expired.

Sure! Here it is with the original target grips:

Thank you ; I came to this thread late.

You inherited a fine revolver. I am a sucker for target grips ; I would have left them on. However - it is your revolver , and I like your homegrown grippy grip solution .
