When I woke up today I had my whole family in one bed and I was pinned down by kids and dogs. I had nothing better to do than read the forums. I came across this gem.

Can we please stop saying "Assault Weapon"

I agree that we should stop saying it but then I thought, "Maybe we should say it so that they [non-shooters] would know what it is." I asked my mother in law what is an assault weapon and her response was pointing to my AR. I sighed and shook my head. What better way to show her then to Google it?

After going through a couple of sites I found this:

The Truth About Assault Weapons

This answered all questions for her.

During her visit I also took her shooting. She was anti gun till this visit.

I have convinced at least one person per month that was anti gun to shoot with me and swayed them to our side. Pass on as much as you can. Them more people you can touch that has the opposite view then there will be more that understand. Show them! Don't just talk.

I just bought a .22lr rifle for this very purpose: I'm going to get as many non-gun people as I can to shoot it.

Or cars, they kill plenty of people.
Sure, cars have a legitemate purpose, but nobody 'needs' an SUV (if they do, they can obtain a special permit).
This isn't such a far fetched analogy either; in the UK metal 'bull bars' are banned, and SUV's have been taxed practically out of existence.

Perhaps we should run ads showing a 16 ounce claw hammer nearly everybody owns and ask "ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE UP YOUR ASSAULT WEAPON ?" and point out that hammers and clubs are used in more murders than all types of guns combined, according to the FBI.

This is inaccurate. Blunt weapons account for more murders than rifles, alone. The argument that hammers account for more murders than guns is flawed and does us no favors. It certainly is a valid argument against banning ARs, in my opinion, but we have to be vigilant in the facts that we present. Every inaccuracy creates a crack in our armor to be exploited by the antis. And rest assured, they'll exploit it. They're already ignorant, willfully or not, and not above lying to achieve their ends. Don't give them the opportunity to paint us as liars.

Though the above may be false, clubs have probably killed more in battle over the millenia than all firearms. They are not considered assault weaponry (okay, maybe a spiked flail would be :D) subject to "special" ownership restrictions--rather, we are restricted from carrying or concealing them, depending on jurisdiction (still bogus, but more "rationalizeable" than an outright ban on ownership/transfer)

I still don't quite see how this jives with the ruling of Miller--somehow the anti's banners seem to always omit how their bans on "military style" weapons are compatible with an explicit Supreme Court ruling protecting civilian access to "militia-suitable" weaponry in order to further the 2nd amendment :scrutiny:

I really hope an AWB makes it to the highest court this go-around. The 10yr sunset on the '94 abomination kept people from trying for one. The new state bans have no such light at the end of the tunnel. I'd think the very reduction of magazine capacity in NY from 10 to 7 would be enough to prove to 8 of the justices what the real intention of these laws are (there's always that one crazy outlier in these rulings, it seems). The justices may be biased, but they do have to justify their rulings without sounding completely idiotic (Ginsberg has been caught "rationalizing" her opinions a number of times and always catches flak for it. She is probably one of the least respected justices with the most percieved bias because of this). Above all, the justices want to be treated well by history, and a big part of that is not writing nonsensical and incoherent opinions that can be picked apart by Civics 101 students ;)
