I've got an old series 70 1911, satin nickel with polished blue barrel, bushing, safety, slide release, trigger and grip safety. It currently has the short trigger from the factory but I'd really like the look and length of a Gold Cup blue trigger. I can pick up the trigger for a reasonable price, but being wider than a normal trigger I have concerns about it fitting. I'd prefer not to alter the frame, so my question is can the GC trigger be thinned enough to fit a standard frame without messing up the trigger stop or anything else? What else would be required in this modification?

In order to retrofit a GC trigger to a standard frame you'll need to alter the frame, and it'll be expensive. No way around it.

Instead, ask around at some of the gunsmith shops for a long, blued Colt take out trigger. They're around, and you can find one if you stay at it.

Being fairly heavy, a long steel trigger may cause hammer follow to half-cock in some few pistols...so be prepared to tweak the sear spring.

Well I guess that's that. Thanks for the advice Tuner. I think if I took the sides of the long trigger down to bare metal it'd get me toward that look.

There's another option, if you're after a wider/longer trigger: a trigger shoe. Unfortunately that adds quite a bit of weight to the trigger and may lead to problems 1911tuner already described.

If you want a Gold Cup trigger, the easiest and cheapest way to get it is to buy a Gold Cup.

I too have an old Series 70 .45. Dad gave it to me when I was 19 and over the last 30 years I've tweaked it a little here and there including replacing the short trigger. The one I installed is the same width as the factory trigger but quite a bit "longer" and has a hex screw for adjustment of overtravel. It was very simple to install and required no modification of the frame. If memory serves I got it from Gun Parts Corporation.

Edit: Just go here: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/ , do a search for "1911 trigger", then click on " 1911 > U.S. 1911 > Parts List > Parts List (*) (9) ". Several trigger options there.

I looked closely at narrowing a Gold Cup trigger to fit a Government Model.
The big holdup is that the overtravel stop screw in the GC trigger is so large that by the time you narrow the blade enough, you may well cut into the stop screw hole or at least leave its walls paper thin.

There are a lot of long standard width triggers. Get a Brownell's catalog and pick something that suits your sense of style.
