Can somebody confirm that my dad, who lives in NV can give me in CA a long gun without going thru an ffl. Were we both residents in CA, it would be no problem. I know it's a no-no for handguns accross state lines.

Somebody will come along and post that since it is a long gun it's OK to do across state lines. HOWEVER, that exemption only applies to purchase a long gun from an out of state FFL and does NOT apply to private party transfers. As Johnny Dollar stated, yes, must go through an FFL.

In addition to the FFL transfer at one OR the other end (not necessarily at both ends) the weapon has to be legal to own in the end users state.
Legal scenarios
Dad in NV sends the long gun to an FFL in CA where son goes through the CA FFL process. Confirm with the FFL first that they will accept the package from a non FFL and will perform the necessary checks. One FFL fee and cost of carry.
Dad in NV uses an FFL at both ends to perform the transfer, 2 sets of fees as well as cost of carry.
Son goes to see Dad in NV, they both go to a local FFL who runs the NICS checks then Son takes the firearm home with him or posts it to himself. One FFL fee
These scenarios presuppose no additional mandatory state or community requirements at either end.

THX. We've used an ffl for handguns, but haven't transfered rifles before.
gbran, I could have sworn your dad gave you that rifle years ago when you were living at home and you just left it there until you got moved in wherever you were moving to and you were going to pick it up next time you were back home. I must have been mistaken...sorry!

I assumed either the above, or he was just "loaning" it to you for "lawful sporting purposes". Either was seems legal without an FFL, correct?
