Question #1 Dad lives in NV, I'm in CA. I want to give or sell a handgun to him. Do I have to use a CA FFL to ship it to a NV FFL or can I drive to NV with the gun and personally deliver it to the NV FFL?

Question #2 Since CA has handgun registration (NV does not) and I sell a handgun of mine out of state, how do I notify CA DOJ to remove it as a firearm I own? CA DOJ will tell you any and every handgun legally bought/sold in your name.

Legally you could personally deliver the handgun to the Nevada FFL for transfer to your father. But be advised that some FFLs, as a matter of business practice, might not be willing to handle things in that way. That would be the FFL's prerogative.

The best thing would be to work out all the details ahead of time with the Nevada transfer FFL.

After you've disposed of the firearm you can fie this form with the California DOJ. Be sure to document the transfer because documentation will need to be submitted with the form.

It would possibly cost you more in fees and shipping costs, but if you brought it to a CA FFL and had them send it to the out of state FFL, then there would certainly be a documented transaction on the books on both sides that could be referenced, in case the DOJ in CA ever gave you a hard time concerning your own documentation of the transfer.

That's my $.02

Thanks all, thanks Frank Ettin. I did download that form.

Am going to visit dad in April anyway. My FFL wants $50 + shipping to send the gun to the NV FFL.

Be sure that NV FFL will accept the out of state transfer from a 'walk-in' - or find another who will.
