I was at my local Starbucks and one of the people who works there was off duty and just getting coffee. I spend a lot of time at Starbucks and know the employees pretty well, so we took a bit of time to just chat.

He asked what I was about this morning, and I fessed up to going to the gun shop to pay off the layaway on the new Bersa. He asked what my wife thought about that and I told him that it would be her carry gun once she gets her permit.

This kid is not a rabid anti, but he isn't a gun fan either. When he hears me talking to friends about shooting his look is usually one of mixed awe and horror. I tread softly around such people because they can swing either way and education is the key, but it should be done softly. He is interested in what we do, but has been raised to be afraid of guns.

I mentioned that Orlando (an hour's drive from here) is now pretty much the car-jack capitol of the southeast and that is spilling over to our little corner of sunny Florida. I then mentioned that someone tried to get into my wife's car at a traffic light just a few blocks down the raod last Thursday night, and that that is only about five blocks from my home. He asked if she had to pull a gun and I replied in a straight dead-pan, "No, but she ran over his foot".

My response, though completely serious, got a laugh from the guy, and the two ladies who were eavesdropping while waiting for their latte's.

Then I mentioned that I have also faced a similar incident at another nearby intersection about two months ago. The guy again asked if I a gun came into play. This time, however, I could see by the look on his face that, since it was a man involved, he expected to hear me say yes. In fact, I honestly believe he was disappointed when I said, "No, I didn't reach for my weapon. It was two o'clock in the morning and there was no traffic, so I hit the gas, ran the red light, and used my cell phone to call 911 and report the incident."

I think the kid was a bit disappointed, but I also think that he, and the two ladies eavesdropping, were pleasantly surprised to find out that people who carry guns aren't raving lunatics who reach for their weapons at slightest provocation.

Any similar events in your lives?

Sounds like you did a great job of subliminally recruiting them to think about things Sato Ord. Well done.

Well it really comes down to kinetic energy: 2 ton car going 5 mph or a 115 gr bullet going 900 fps.

I'm glad you didn't have to pull and you are right, education is the key. Keep on the good work ambassador

Good story, well told.

Whether a person shoots or not (most people don't, just like "most people" can't possibly do all that many things from a wide universe of choices), it's good for them to hear such things. A lot of people are so conditioned by their fear that they'd probably care to alone in a room with a loaded gun about as much as with a restless rattlesnake. Always good for a little alternative thought pattern to sneak in through the cracks ;)
