I was at my LGS today got talking about deer hunting. He told me that there is a possible new federal law concerning semi auto rifles for hunting. He told me that they will have to be made to hold 5 rounds or less. Since I hunt with a stock SKS and I don't want to change it this could create a problem. Have any of you out there heard anything about this?

On the SKS, you have to get a specialized clip that holds 5 rounds or less, or use a dummy block to minimize the capacity. State laws vary, check with your local legislature, or NRA for better information.

In PA you can only use a semi-auto shotgun w/ a limit of three shells. Plug must be in it. No semi-auto rifles are allowed for hunting.

I don't know about any bill, but I have an SKS rifle set up with a 5 round mag. I like it, easier to carry one handed at the balance point of the rifle as the magazine doesn't extend beyond the bottom of the stock. Don't hunt with it much. Got better rifles for that. It's just a truck gun.

Federal law????

And certain radio personalities rail against Internet forums as a prime source for BS and lies.

IME gun shops are the worst closely followed by gunshows THEN comes the Internet

"...new federal law..." Other than whatever the U.S. legislation covering the Migratory Bird Treaty is called, hunting regs are State jurisdiction only.

We have had the 5 round law in Az. for many years. Not just for big game either, but also for migratory bird hunting the capacity limit is 2+1, maybe that is 3+1 ?

Most State Wildlife agencies limit the number of rounds in your "big game" rifles just as they limit hunting shotguns to three rounds. I does not mean that you have to permenantly disfigure your gun, only that while you are hunting the capacity must be limited. As soon as you leave the duck blind, you can take the plug out of the magazine tube and load 8 rounds if you wish. Hunting is suposed to be about carefull accurate shots and fair chase, not "spray an pray". Don't read to much anti gun scheeming into it. :)

Maybe a state law
Most likely.
hunting regs are State jurisdiction only.
Exactly! The feds have no jurisdiction here other than migratory birds (because they cross state lines). This comes under the 10th Amendment. Alabama has no such law limiting number of hunting rounds(possibly on WMAs).

I thought migratory birds was 3 round limit.

As to your sks - put a wood block in it and pin it. Keep two mags.. one for hunting, one for the rest of the time.

I use a 5 round zytel magazine in the SKS for hunting. Just remove the 10 round original and pop in the 5 rounder. Swaps back just as easily.

Hunting regs (except migratory waterfowl and endangered species) have pretty much been left up to the states, expecially what guns are legal. I suspect if there was a federal bill with any chance of leaving committee, the NRA would be on it like P38s on Yamamoto.

Pretty normal.

Here it is something like 5 or 10 rounds, except for .22 caliber (then it is any capacity).
