Me, my roommate, my girlfriend, and two other guys we know that carry are hanging out playing a little cards. Its about 11ish and we hear a weird noise at the front door. I look out the side window, there's a car out front, doors open, only park lights on. Then I notice someone by our front door and I make out he has a crow bar. Everyone is quietly moved to the back room, shotguns and hand guns come out, everyone is armed. 2 cell phones are calling 911. Cops say they are 15 min away, so I give all the info I know (I made out the model and color of the car). Roommate and the two friends go up to the front door & Roommate racks the slide on the shotgun, then you hear the crow bar hitting the ground and a car screeching about 3 second later. Cops show up in about 30 min with the guys in the back seat, wanting to know if I could ID them, couldn't because it was to dark. We later discovered they had loosened the light bulb that is by the front door. The cops were really cooperative being the guys caught are believed to be behind a string on break ins. So far everything is on the up and up. Cops took fingerprints of the bulb, crowbar, and front door. I told everyone to not touch anything while waiting for the 5O.

I can't help but agree. I'm sorry, there might be some fairly uncommon instances where the sound of a racking shotgun caused murder and mayhem to a homeowner but I'm more than willing to know that this same sound has ended many a potential break-in in a non-violent manner just like it did for my grandfather once.

Good job,
Mark(psycho)Phipps( HAHAHA! )

Sounds like your police are on to them and they'll catch them soon.

And some in here have argued the intimidation value of the sound of a shotgun slide racking. When your thug was behind that door, he was wondering, "I hope that these guys will be helpless and surprised when I come in." When he heard that sound, his question was answered.

My Dad had an intruder in his home (Phx) when he was living alone, all he saw was the shadow of a man in the hallway (hall light was on), dad said it took all the strength he could muster (he said he was literally frozen in bed..this from a 3 time decorated combat soldier and 9 months in a N.Korean POW camp), he racked the slide of an old Colt .32 and the shadow just went away. Took dad an hour of suspicious listening to finally determine the guy was gone. I personally agree wit youse guys, I love the sound of racking my Mossberg.

While it is possible the guy could've been concealing a handgun, I think most criminals know a shotgun trumps whatever they have in their pocket. And 9 times out of 10, racking the slide will have the desired effect. It's the tenth time that worries me.

The sound does two things:

It say, "I'm armed and I see you."

This is probally enough to make them think twice.

Gotta agree.

One time when I was literally in diapers. My dad was on a deployment. A man tried to break into the house. My mother, sweet angel of the lord she is, racked in a round on a shotgun on the man and told him to go away.

He left. I have no doubts that my mother would have splattered that man all over the kitchen. My mother is very protective and she had three very young children in the house at the time

Dang! I had my heart set on a semi-auto shottie. Having to pump is just a tactical problem. Maybe I can record the sound and play it somehow.

Just get an extended magazine and put in one more round. I guarantee that firing your scattergun will make the bad guy at least as scared as racking it :)

Cybert:

How is a pump shotgun a "tactical" problem?

The vast majority of "tactical" shotguns are pumps. How do you explain this?

I heard that they recently did a study and found that the sound of cocking a shotgun is more intimitating than the sound of racking the slide on a handgun or anything else. My friend pointed out that the only problem with it is that it give away your position.

Racking a pump is much louder (in my experience) than racking the slide on most handguns, though. That's got to play a certain role in it.

Eh, when I rack the bolt on my semiauto Saiga 12 it is louder than any pump I've heard. "KA-CHANK!" I think it's because the bolt slams forward pretty hard.

I think Cybert meant to say "tactical problem" as in for i.e. maneurability inside a house?....

Would it be better to let the guy break should he had not run away? In such a situation when you are aware of a possible intruder outside trying to break in and hes not know of your presense, I think it would be a better strategy to wait for him inside since going out would place you at a disadvantage since you don;t know whats outiside. Plus wouldnt the BG get in more trouble legally?

Oh by the way, you should be careful from now on. They now know you are armed and might try to break in when you are not home to steal your weapons or even try to jack you personally. Thives are becoming wilder everyday....

Its a tactical problem?

Why not get yourself a good pump shotgun and a good semi-auto shotgun? I think the pump would work just fine and love mine. But to each their own. Go and get yourself a Mossberg 590 and any tactical problems you face will probably go away.

Nice work to the original poster.

My cousin told me that my 1300 defender sounds like "the wrath of god commin down on ya"
This was after he came into my house one night to ask me if I wanted to go fishing(3:00AM)and woke me:cuss:

Apparently the sound of "the wrath of god commin down on ya" is music to my ears. ;-)

Thats the scary part. 15 minutes away????

Yet the antis say only police should have guns.

Think of what can happen being unarmed for 15 minutes.

Prone

Prone position may be an issue with a pump. I remember hearing in the Patty Hearst raid/shoot-out LAPD had to shoot from prone behind a street curb. They had to break cover to pump.

Personally I use a Mossberg 500 or an 870. I also had a person pry at a window, turned on a light and said something, he kept on. Racked the 500 and found a screwdriver the next morning. Tossed the scredriver, kept the 500.

My thing would have been that as soon as I retrieved the shotgun I would have racked the slide and filled the mag tube (it rides "cruiser safe" in the corner) What I would have done is with the Police on the line, 911 records everything, make some loud commands to go away now, that the Police were on their way and we are armed and don't want any trouble.

Great outcome!!!

I'll bet a tape of a 12 gauge pump action being worked would almost be as effective. TV has taught the bad guys well.

30 minutes? You are lucky the showed up at all.
