Well, the latest "SHTF" thread over in general got me to thinking... I know there's combo rifles out there, but how difficult would it be to put a secondary "survival" .22 in the forearm of a standard hunting rifle? It seems the ideal thing for when you spot Thumper while looking for Bambi. :)

I'm not thinking full-on combo rifle here -- rather an accessory made as unobtrusive and lightweight as possible. Imagine a flush-mounted 7" bbl or so .22lr built into the forearm of a standard boltgun. Ideally, it wouldn't alter the lines or handling of the host rifle much at all, and would be mounted so as to share the rifle's optic POA at about 25 yards or so. Perhaps zeroed as a whole unit via setscrews in the stock?

Either single shot or semi-auto, no more than 3-5 rounds in the mag really necessary if semi. Perhaps a Patterson-style trigger arrangement, only flipping down when needed?

Yes, I know NFA would prolly throw fits at the tiny barrel and all, but presuming the legal hassles could be taken care of.. how possible is it, and has it been done?

That would be a cool little gun. However as you mentioned NFA would be throwing a big roadblock in the way of anyone developing it. You would probably have to have a push button trigger or something similar as you wouldn't want a second trigger hanging down from the front grip & a linkage to the other trigger might get complicated (electronically fired? Or an electromagnet to release the firing pin if you just want the one trigger? However in a SHTF/civilization is dead rifle I really don't want electronics on it).

Probably easier just to carry a MkII on your hip with a shoulder stock that you could slip over the butt to make a SBR.

So, your rifle would have the lines of something tube-fed such as a Marlin model 60? I could live with that, sounds interesting.

POA would be a problem if you're trying to use the same sights as on your main rifle.

A better solution would be to have a long-barreled Single-Six or Buckmark on your hip. If you need a steadier hold, a detachable wire stock (i.e. STEN gun) would be pretty neat....

...and would get ATF's panties in such a wad, too.

Thinking about it over dinner, how about a scope mount on the bottom of the front grip? You could clamp your pistol to it that way. It would be incredibly unwieldy & tough to shoot but it would hold it steady :D .

Oddly enough, that's been done. Some outfit -- I think out of Israel -- has made the oddest arrangement I've ever seen. It attaches to the bottom rail on an AR forearm, loops around, and sticks up the little hole in a Glock grip. The idea being to have your secondary weapon right there as a vertical forearm.

Odd, enh?
