Well, the latest "SHTF" thread over in general got me to thinking... I know there's combo rifles out there, but how difficult would it be to put a secondary "survival" .22 in the forearm of a standard hunting rifle? It seems the ideal thing for when you spot Thumper while looking for Bambi.
I'm not thinking full-on combo rifle here -- rather an accessory made as unobtrusive and lightweight as possible. Imagine a flush-mounted 7" bbl or so .22lr built into the forearm of a standard boltgun. Ideally, it wouldn't alter the lines or handling of the host rifle much at all, and would be mounted so as to share the rifle's optic POA at about 25 yards or so. Perhaps zeroed as a whole unit via setscrews in the stock?
Either single shot or semi-auto, no more than 3-5 rounds in the mag really necessary if semi. Perhaps a Patterson-style trigger arrangement, only flipping down when needed?
Yes, I know NFA would prolly throw fits at the tiny barrel and all, but presuming the legal hassles could be taken care of.. how possible is it, and has it been done?
