from hunting in Indiana for life. There are some serious fines too.

"Along with his lifetime hunting ban in Indiana, Pusey also received a one-year jail sentence (with all but 4 days suspended), and orders to serve home detention and 361 days of probation. He also must pay a $1,000 Animal Replacement Fee to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), according to the Indianapolis Star.

The DNR detailed its investigation into Pusey in a Nov. 14 press release. During the multiyear operation, the department worked alongside fish and wildlife law enforcement officials in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Lesser convictions in those states resulted as well. The DNR specified that he'll pay $4,125 in fines and costs and serve an 8-year hunting license suspension in Pennsylvania; $324 in fines and costs and an indefinite suspension in Connecticut; $700 in fines and costs and license suspension during a probation period in Massachusetts; $2,335 in fines and costs in Georgia; $278 in fines and costs in North Carolina; and $525 in fines and costs in Tennessee."

Reading the linked article you can see a pattern of flagrant disregard for the law and lack of respect for both animals and hunters who obey the law. I read into his attitude that the law doesn't apply to him, only to others. Have to wonder who raised him.

The N.C. fine is a joke. A non-resident turkey license probably costs almost as much.

Kind of all looked like a joke to me. Sentenced to 1 year and served 4 days of it…?

Banned from hunting for life? How does that effect a guy that wasn’t following the laws regarding hunting in the first place?

How much does a multiyear operation between 6 States cost? I don’t have an answer but it’s a hell of a lot more than the fines he may or may not pay. It’s not just a joke but absurd.

The fines seems cheap I know of a guy here that was hunting over bait for deer got busted 2nd day of archery season a couple years ago he paid almost 2k in fines and court cost plus lost his bow and 1 year loss of hunting rights.

How does any law in place do anything for a person determined to break the law?

Certainty and severity of punishment has a history of working.

Serving 4 days of a 1 year sentence means he endured 1.096% of the punishment he was given….

Maybe big fines matter, but loss of the hunting license seems of little use for deliberate poachers who repeat their behavior for years and certainly don't view a license as a big deal. Current news story ut there about a California group tied to a corrupt license vendor that has been carrying on a highly organized poaching racket. A lengthy jail term would seem to be the only thing that would actually stop the behavior, at least while they're locked up.

Kind of like a suspended driver's license. Won't stop you from driving, but the penalties get worse each time they catch you. Eventually you be in a heap of trouble.
