I am looking for advise on applying for carry permit in Iowa. Any suggstions? What is the process? Is a class needed?

I feel as if I am fighting an uphill battle in a rainstorm, letters to state reps are in the draft stage with hopes of getting shall issue legislation in the works this year, to bad our Gov will never let it happen.

I have a friend in Iowa with a CCW licence and the first thing I would do is go talk to your local sheriff to see what his views are on them. In Iowa it's totally up the the discrestion of the local sheriff who gets them and who doesn't. Some are pretty liberal about or like in the county where my friend lives only a very people get them. He was able to get his because he has an FFL.

I don't really remember what he said the process was but I do remember he had to take a shooting qualification test.

IOWA

I lived in Iowa for two years. Getting a Weapons Permit in IA all comes down to what the sheriff thinks. The county I lived in(Wapello) the Sheriff would give out a permit to anyone that claimed to carry large amounts of cash, but that was the only reason he would give out a permit. The county that I worked in(Mahaska) would not allow anyone to get a permit. Not even the local FFL that had just got robbed!!!

I would suggest getting to know your Sheriff if you are in a county that does not normally issue permits. Maybe next time he runs for relection you can do a bunch of volunteer work. Then the next time you go in to apply for a permit you can ask to talk to the Sheriff personally, and plead your case. If the Sheriff is unwilling to issue a permit you could find a new canidate and incourage him to run!!

Everyone wishes IA was a Shall Issue state, but as long as Vilsak is govenor I would not hold your breath about getting a Shall Issue law passed.

Thanks for the info. I am in Story county if this helps with advise.

I note sturms idea, cronyism!! Kinda what they have in New York and Chicago I guess. Would most Iowns take it as a compliment if it was stated we are like New Yorkers?

IT would be nice to hear from more people with Iowa permits.

I did my Iowa training at Training Specialists in DSM. They are an excellant resource for people with IA permit questions. If I remember correctly I did have someone in my class from Story County. I think the Sheriff there issues permits to everyone.

I too live in Story county....it's tough to get, but can be done. Here's why..., the toughest counties to get one in are also the most liberal counties politically. These counties are where Universities are located (Story, Johnson, Blackhawk)....they have the highest number of registered "liberals". Sheriff is an elected position...if he wants to be re-elected, he best be in line with the majority of his constituents or he'll be out of a job. Any Sheriff seen as issuing vast numbers of permits creates a real political problem for his re-election.

....don't, I repeat, don't say you want one for personal protection....rather say that you are a collector and carry merchandise and large sums of cash for your hobby. I would also suggest some credentials from training classes etc to support your hobby....Good luck....

Iowa needs a shall issue law so law-abiding citizens don't have to grovel to politicians.

I find it sort of ironic that "being liberal" with CCW issuance means more people get a license.

The current NRA President is from Iowa and he's a big shot in the Republican party. I wonder why NRA has never tried to get non-discretionary passed in Iowa.

Ask the IRPA why they aren't burning up the state to get reform enacted?

Inquiring minds want answers.

I live in a NW Iowa county and I have one. They are tough to get here. I think there are only 200 issued in the county. The counties directly north of here issue to anyone who is not a felon. It's an unfair system.

One county that I know of that is very carry friendly is Cass. It's as shall issue as shall issue can be. When I went in to apply for mine & was asked for the reason I wanted it the lady that was taking the applications told me, repeat after me "I carry large amounts of cash late at night" She said they knew well & fully supported that the permit was for self defense but the state wouldn't accept the paperwork if any other reason was listed.

I currently live in Cedar Rapids (Linn County) & it's completely different here. You have to demonstrate need by having to carry $500 in cash (permit is invalid otherwise) & you have to pass a shooting test as well.

BTW, has anyone seen a list of what the requirements are for each county? I've been thinking about calling the Sheriff depts. of all 99 counties on one of my days off.

no but I think it would be nice if pro gun iowans could get together and build a resource of information on ccw and anything else needed. website and a forum.

Sorry F4GIB, but your question suggests the NRA has "NEVER" tried and Kayne Robinson has not used his magical wand to make it happen. We have been working on this for years through several organizations. Appears you are not familiar with the Iowa situation.

Some years ago a disgruntled citizen walked into a city council meeting, pulled a gun, aimed it at the mayor's head and killed him...another city council member sitting at the table when this happened then took over responsibilities of the deceased mayor. His name was Tom Vilsak, currently the Govenor of Iowa. He will never sign a CCW bill....I repeat, NEVER!

So before you start suggesting people here are not working hard enough...perhaps you should find out what you're talking about.

Iowa CCW

CCW in Iowa. = Whatever the sheriff deems.

Blawkhawk county is an exception to the rule for large cites, Sheriff Kubik issues quite a few permits to carry.

12-34hom.

To RACENUTZ regarding the $500 requirement. Does that mean you just have to always keep $500 in your wallet? Or do you have to be on the way to the bank to make a deposit? Just curious. Keeping $500 in the wallet would be a pain, but worth it for 24/7 CCW.

NBKUVS, yes you have to have $500 on your person for the permit to be valid. I agree that's not too bad (keep the $500 instead of buying another gun) but the chance of even getting a permit is close to zero.

that $500 required for the permit to be valid sucks when you want it for hunting in winter.

on top of that its $500 you cannot spend.

Well as we can see Iowa still has a way to go but this has brought to my attention that there are others near by who agree with me and are trying to get things changed.

Thanks for the hints. When I make an attempt at this I will show shooting training proof and go with the I carry valuable materials often. Could you buy a fancy ring and state that you always have materials an cash valued at $500 on you at all times? And when you consider the piece you are carrying, you are probably already over $500, that is stretch though. I will also list for handgun hunting as well as transport of firearms.

From what I understand here dont say self defense and dont say RKBA......

It maybe a while before I make an attempt but I will update with my results when I try.
