The opportunity to practice shooting at moving targets, spinning targets, multiple targets and shooting while moving is pretty rare anywhere else. Even in an advanced pistol class, you will likely only get to engage one target while moving- and then under very controlled circumstances.
USPSA, IDPA and IPSC allows anybody with the gumption, equipment and safety requirements to engage multiple targets, on the move, while under time pressure and dealing with mag changes and stoppages. While the "tactics" aspect may be questionable. You will be a better shooter after competing for a while- period. Where better to reasonably test your skills under pressure than in a match? I've heard that starting gunfights to do the same is unpopular.
Heck, we had a match last month where we engaged targets with an AR from a moving golf cart. Where else can you do that?
