Is .45-70 worth it if you're not using it to hunt?

The primary reason to tool up to load 45/70 would be in order to shoot the firearms so chambered

if you are just shooting paper with a shotgun chamber adapter the answer is a resounding no for me.

your 45acp adapter will go bang and put a 45ish hole in a piece of paper exactly like the 45/70 one will. It will just cost less and recoil less.

Simply owning any form of 45-70 brings a smile to my face. I can reload mouse farts all the way to knocking your teeth out! Just plain fun. Oh and I do hunt deer and hog with mine as well.

If the shotgun chamber adapter is the way to shoot it then I would just shoot slugs, but they are pretty expensive range fodder at the moment.

my winchester 85 short rifle is one of my favorite carry rifles, but my ruger # 3 is my favorite.

Hunting is not the only reason to own a gun in any caliber. If you have to justify owning a gun, you are thinking wrong

I shot my 1874 sharps quigley edition 2 days ago i bought it a week ago. 45-70 is very expensive.. 50$ a bix of 20.. it sucked when i ran out of 2 boxes in a hour lol.

But lemme tell ya shooting that thing with the Hornady RTX rounds. It had so much recoil snd sound people in the range were eye balling me. My shoulder stll hurts lol.. and thats with a 15 lbs gun too haha.

When i hit my targets and the round went into the dirt pile. It would impact like a mini meteor throwing dirt up. While others woth 30-30 or what ever rounds didnt do anything. The mussle energy coming out of this 34 inch long barrel on my sharps, with RTX rounds must be insaine. Id hate to be shot by it.. lol

Id say yes.. 45-70 is very worth it.. especially in this rifle haha.. i just wish i had more boxes of it.

I did an ammo count last night. I have 260 45acp, 300 44 Magnum, only 80 lead balls for my 1851 left, 175 shotgun shells and only 23 45-70. Hell its hard to ssve up ammo in anything.. i keep shooting everything at the range lol

I think its going to take me awhile to build up 45-70 with inly 20 rnds a box and these prices.

Left hand- if I'm not using it to take an
animal or bird with, and only punching
holes in a square of paper, in 2021
I'd be just shooting 22LR rounds.

OTOH

Right hand- has any of us ever needed
a legitimate excuse for buying things
and for doing whatever we do ?

Either I'm absolute garbage shooting slugs or the slugs I shot were not good in my shotgun or my shotgun doesn't like slugs, but whatever it is slugs in the shotgun I have are not an option.

And even if they were I'd only go out to maybe 100 yards with them, with the .45-70 I can shoot twice or thrice that distance.

Regulation would be a bit of a question. You can probably hold pretty decent groups with a single barrel, but the two barrels together maynot (or they may, again without trying hard to tell), shoot to the same poa.

50$ a bix of 20
50 bucks for 20rnds aint THAT bad......

The big Wby rounds not caught on sale often go for over 100 bucks a box

even my 28 Nosler is 88bucks a box of 25brass :p

There's nothing that says I have to use two inserts in each barrel, if I find that one barrel shoots very poorly compared to the other then I'll just leave it as a de facto combination gun.

But at 25 yards to see the POI between the two barrels be almost identical, that bodes well.

probably MCA....tho I could be wrong.... I looked their insert options a while back and they are well thought of, ill check to see if getting and adjustable one is an option
Don't think it was them, dad had a set years ago. They were 200-250 each back then, I did see other adjustable ones somewhere. Pedersoli used to make some to.

Being the owner of an MCA and having seen the Chaszel adapters, the Chaszels have a superior fit and finish and cost less too.

The only thing from MCA that I would buy now is the rifle adapters to shoot .22 LR in a .223 or .32 or .30 Carbine in .308, that sort of thing. For anything shotgun, if you can get it from Chaszel go with them.

What kind of accuracy are people getting with these things? I wouldn’t have thought they would hold POI that well.

Nothing like hearing the PLONK of the 45-70 round chambering in a Sharps.
A bang.
Get up, go to the restroom, wash, get water boiling, swab the bore, make some coffee and a sandwich, clean up, then sit back down to see the impact through the spotting scope at 600 yards and another while for the CLANG to reach you.

My favorite rifles are 45-70 trapdoors.

Good to know, my 9mm adapter is a Chaszel and ive been very happy with it.

Ive never tried to shoot groups with mine.....Im running gobbler sights on the rib of my 20, and while i have little issue hitting a 3" spinner at 50yds, i cant shoot groups with opens.

I would answer that I have shot only one animal with my .458 Win Mag (Pig), but do very much enjoy having and shooting it.

I have three power levels for it. I shoot mostly full power.

Full power (Take your pick, H-322 right now)
.45-70 power (AA 5477)
Powder puff .44 Mag (Trail Boss)
