I have been looking at the Para LTC 1911 in 9mm. Good things have been said about it and is supposed to be very accurate. I currently shoot a CZ75 and a full size 1911 for steel and IDPA.

Would using a 4 1/2 1911 gun be a wise choice? I really want to shoot more 9mm as is everyone else these days.

It's whatever you want to shoot in IDPA. If that's what you're gonna carry, it's perfect. You know, IDPA accuracy is a 10" bullseye at 10 yards.

Where I shoot IDPA, it is an 8" bullseye and the ranges run out to 35 yards.

I don't know about you and ski, but I am significantly less accurate with a shorter gun. If you want to exercise a carry gun, great. If you want a score, shoot full size.

I’ve shot (and won) more than a few matches with my commander length 2011. It has a full length and width dust cover with a commander slide in 9mm. Gamer pistol? Sure, but it’s fast and flat.

Those are some looking guns there jmorris. I may give the Para a try, the shorter length also makes for an easy carry.
