Is Anything Legal for Protection in NYC?

I used to carry a nylon punch knife when I flew. I don't know that I'd risk it in today's climate, but I never had a problem. I doubt if it's legal, but short of a frisking, it's undetectible. It saved my bacon in Vegas once, though no blood was shed, luckily.
