Is Gander Mountain worth the drive?

The ONLY advantage that Gander Mountain has for me is that at least at one time, they were the ONLY place anywhere near where I live which stocked Federal match primers. NOBODY else in NE Ohio had them when I needed them.

Other than that, they're not much use, except for odds and ends like decapping pins and such on short notice. I bought a couple of bags of those there last week.

Now if you had a Cabela's an hour away, it would be WELL worth the drive. Gander Mountain (at least the one an hour away from me) is just a no frills store. No cool mounts, no big fish tank, no restaurant that serves elk burgers. Just a store.

I wouldn't drive an hour out of my way for any gun/sporting goods store, unless it was for a very specific item they had. That being said, I'd stop in when you're in that area for other purposes. I find a lot of good deals on used guns there.

i drive out of my way to AVOID having to shop at Gouger Mountain. it's the more convenient to get to, but it's an inconvenience to my bank account.

My two local stores around here are Gander Mountain in Mooresville, NC and Bass Pro in Concord, NC. The first is about 15 minutes away and the later about 40 minutes away.

The good about Gander Mtn.

They have a fairly decent selection on the more common stuff. They do have a fair amount of second hand rifles, even if most of them are your typical hunting selection. They have some decent kayaks too in stock and the store regularly has sales.

The bad about Gander Mtn.

The prices typically are fairly expensive. You can get the same knife from across the parking lot in other stores for $20 cheaper for instance.

The customer service is an abomination. They seem especially sexist, having seen them tell women to be quiet, hush them and walk off in the middle of inquiries. I had to resist the urge to punch the one guy who insulted my wife and cost himself a new rifle sale. I had contact with half a dozen other women who reported similar stories. For males they occasionally will come and help you, but really I seen better service at some Walmart.

In the end I prefer to go to the Bass Pro. Their customer service is infinitely more knowledgeable and polite and will usually bend over backwards to help you. I had them call around every store they had for the last pair of boots in my size that I wanted in stock and had it shipped at their expense and saved for me.

The only thing I prefer about Gander is they put rifles and shotguns on racks where you can easily see them, rather than asking for one behind the counter, they tended to have a few more choices and the occasional surplus or AR15 in stock, but really there are stores that have ridiculously better collections for sale such as Hyatt Gun Store in Charlotte, NC with similar prices and other stores do the prices for much cheaper.

I've found some really outstanding deals for used guns at my local GM. I stop in whenever I'm in the area. Some of their sales are good. The selection of new pistols, rifles and shotguns is good. Prices are on the high side. They price match retail ammo prices.

I sometimes drive the hour it takes to go to a shop in Richmond, (Greentop), just for the heck of it. If you have nothing better to do, by all means visit the GM, but I wouldn't go just to see what they're like.

I go within a mile of the local GM every day on my way to and from work. I have only been inside maybe a half dozen times.

I called Gander recently to get a price on 1000 Large Rifle Winchester primers - $30.99/1000. That's $10 more than PowderValley. With tax they'd be $33. Buy 2000 and you've covered your HAZMAT fee. Buy 3000 and there's your shipping (or maybe you've already saved that on gas). Then add some powder and bullets and any other reloading component you need for prices 30% off Gander's and you're saving a lot of money and aggravation.

"I think it was here that I saw the nickname "Gouger Mountain". It fits."

Amen. A pound of powder and a box of bullets was about 6-8 dollars higher, each, than at Sportsman's Warehouse. They will never get me again.

Cheese if you at the PB court house you should check out Dewing’s Fly and Gun shop. They have a lot of high end doubles, over unders and sporting rifles. It’s a small shop but the owners and employees are very friendly. Every time I stop in just to look they ask if I see anything I like. I tell the yes but I have to sell my truck and house first.:D

It’s a short walk from the Court House and there’s a good restaurant bar on the water next to it.

They have a good selection, but their prices are high (if we're talking about ammo, prices are INSANE).

Welllllll, their selection is good only on certain items. I have several stores around me and bought some reloading supplies at one (even though their selection was sparse) so the next time when I was closer to another I stopped in for more stuff. They had almost nothing in reloading supplies! The manager told me that when they do their market research before a store goes up, they decide which products will sell and which won't. Evidently, this location had few reloaders? Whatever.

Long story short - I only shop G.Mtn. if I'm driving by for some other reason.

Only if you don't have other choices. Prices were higher than their competitors, but knowledge or service at the gun counter didn't seem to be correspondingly better. They usually do have a nice selection laid out for display and keep many items in stock, though.

When I was in Wichita (and GM was a 20-30 minute drive), I only bought one firearm from GM. I picked up a used Benelli Nova for a very reasonable price ($200). Everything else was about par or slightly overpriced.

Now where I live, I would have to drive an hour and a half to get to a GM or Sportsman's Warehouse. The only reason I will drive there is to buy reloading components.

We have two in my general area. If I am on the east side or west side of town for another reason, I usually stop in and browse. I've bought a few guns from the east side store.
However, It's a 50 mile round-trip drive in my Jeep to either one. Given the price of gasoline, it's usually less expensive to order ammo and such online and have it delivered right to my doorstep.
I normally buy guns at Vance's (3 miles away) or Norton's (on my way home from work). I always just keep right on driving by the Dick's. :)
But Gander Mountain is a fun place to browse.

I know a fair number of people who think highly of GM and their prices, but most of them shop there for things other than guns and ammo.

Rude and uninformed staff, high prices (guns and ammo alike), but good selection at the one in Greensboro, NC.

It might be "six of one and a half dozen of the other" if you found a rare gun at Gander and bought it instead of going through a FFL + postage...maybe.

I called there yesterday, literally ready to buy a gun, and got put on hold for 5 minutes twice, called customer service and said "Hi, I'm going to buy a gun from you. I really need to speak to someone on the phone though before I come buy. Can you put me right through? I've held twice now." Her response was something like "Please learn to be patient, we have lots of customers IN the store sir."

No biz from me...

Gander

I have one kinda close 20 min but its very pricey I bought some speer gold dots 155gr 40S&W $20 something thought that seem high call local gunshop whos high they were lower so went back to get a price match but I had 4 boxes so it was like $12 bucks so i guesss i just keep ordering on line from www.grafs.com they have evety thing and dont over charge for shipping.

Theres a Gander Mountain about 10 minutes from me, but I rarely go there. I dont find them all that helpful, and they do not have much in their inventory IMO

When I called and announced "I want to buy a gun, I just have a question" and they called me back, it was revealed that I would have to pay shipping from THEIR distributor to them...ROFL!

Gander Mtn prices,on average, are outrageous. BUT every once in a while you can get a fabulous deal on a preowned weapon. I've bought a few and got great deals. More often than not, it's a waisted trip. The trouble is when is it a waisted trip? So I have to keep going there. Last purchase was a Belgian Mauser. Not the best price,$199, but I've never seen a Belgian Mauser. Gun before that was a 4" Python for $499. You just never know!

Gouger Mountain that sounds about right. It was rumored they would shut down every other gun/ sportgoods in Paducah, KY. How are they going to do that with on advanage $100 to $150 over their price on any rifle. I would drive out of my way not to go there.
