I've been tossing around the idea of adding a pistol to my collection. Today, I got my Cabela's order for my 10/22 and the put in a 50rd box of Wolf Gold 9mm by accident. Anyways, since I have only fired BP pistols, what would be a good choice for a 9mm. I'm looking for a semi auto that is light weight and a medium to full size frame. I don't plan on getting a concealed carry anytime soon so that is not a consideration. Thanks.
 
Other than specifying "light weight" you haven't really given us much to go on. But on that aspect alone, I'd recommend a S&W M&P 9mm. It's a full size weapon, and in my opinion the best of the newer designs using a polymer frame.
 
Me thinks you should go rent a few 9mms to try. Really, with any of the major brands, it comes down to personal preference. U will undoubtedly get everyone's personal fav gun mentioned in this thread.

As anyone who knows me online would expect me to say, my all time fav is the Walther P99 with the A/S trigger. I've convinced 14 people to buy them since last Nov or so.

But, except for Taurus and a couple of other lower end brands - they are all good guns. But, many guns have nuances with the trigger - so, renting can help. I have owned several Glocks over the years, but finally gave up my last one recently - I sold it because I just don't like Glock triggers - not after shooting my P99 so much.

Thanks, and I'll be more specific. As with all of my guns, I like the balance to be neutral to slightly weight forward. This'll be a range pistol and something I can easily strip down (I store the actions seperate of the guns due to my kids). The other variable is price. I want something I can have for many years. It'll be stored for long periods of time. When my kids are old enough to shoot, I'll also want something good for fundimentals and rugged enough to be dropped w/o accidential discharge (no exposed hammer?).

You are lucky to be able to make such a mistake and get it. I wish I could make a mistake and get ANY ammo shipped to MA. Heck, some places won't even send me pellets.:banghead:
 
based on your revised requirements, i'd say go with either a glock 19 or a springfield xd. They have both been torture tested to the nth degree, and for the glock in particular theres all kinds of aftermarket parts and accessories you can use to tweak it to your exact demands.
 
Actually - it is doubtful that U will keep just 1 gun of this type - eventually, U will want another. :p

But, before buying a Glock - try one. Many people hate the trigger. Except for the Glock 34 which comes with a slightly lighter trigger stock - I ALWAYS shot low and to the left with any Glock - and I do this with no other gun. Some people take a while to get used to a Glock trigger - and it can be harder for some if U have several different guns and don't practice with it exclusively. They rent Glocks at my local range, and I am ALWAYS seeing people shoot low with the things..

Decide if U want metal or polymer. Then, go hold some and see what feels best to U. I am a fan of the Walthers, and HK - both make guns that will last a long time.

Beretta also makes a great 9mm - the 92FS - sucks up recoil like U wouldn't believe - lightest recoiling 9mm I ever shot.
 
Yes, U will only find a used Glock for that price.

For that amount - I'd recommend either a Ruger P series 9mm semi auto - Or, U can buy a SToeger Cougar 9mm for around $300-$330. It is essentially the same gun as the Beretta Cougar that Beretta introduced in the 1990s. Now that Beretta has the PX4 - they transferred the machinery to a subsidiary that they own - Stoeger. The finish isn't quite as nice as the Beretta version. But, it's about $200 cheaper and is still the same gun.

For $350 or less, it would be my #1 choice.

Also, look at the FNP9mm - U can find one for a tad over $400 - and it has the best DA trigger pull I've ever felt on a DA/SA pistol with an external hammer.
 
Yup, the Stoeger (if i can find one) is going to be added to my arsenal. Beretta engineers a fine pistol.
Also look into older S&W's metal frames guns or Used Glock 9mm.

My favorite affordable new 9mm's
Taurus PT92 do some research. Taurus poly's are hit or miss so I normally only suggest the PT92.

Ruger P89 shoots so accurately it'll make you look good, trust me.

There's others but I prefer these two over anything else. Now neither of these pistols are compact and good for conceal ability but my friend 5'10 maybe 150lbs use to CCW his PT92 so it is possible.

For a compact lightweight 9mm think polymer. Personally the only plastic gun I trust is a Glock. Just because it's the only pistol the average handy man could fix with out any special tools and a handy dandy manual.
 
Don't know if there's gun shows near you... Bundeswehr-surplus P1s (Alloy-frame P38s) are going for under $300 around here. Several people have shot mine, and then bought one at the next gunshow.
 
What are your thoughts on the full frame baretta

Went to a few stores today and one universal concern I had with the "Glock style" pistols was the lack of absolute positive safety. All of the polimer frames I looked at did have a trigger and/or backstrap safety but the pistol was off safe when gripped. While this is fine for true HD and as a service piece, I can see my wife or one of my kids blowing a toe off or worse.

I liked the features of the Baretta but what are your thoughts. Thanks.




BTW-For those who are single and kidless, enjoy your toys while you can. Once life hits you you'll sound like the old man on the board.:p
