Face to face without the benefit of an FFL for a handgun is illegal when the buyer and seller are from different States per Federal law.

(B3) May an unlicensed person obtain a firearm from an out-of-State source if the person arranges to obtain the firearm through a licensed dealer in the purchaser’s own State?

A person not licensed under the GCA and not prohibited from acquiring firearms may purchase a firearm from an out-of-State source and obtain the firearm if an arrangement is made with a licensed dealer in the purchaser's State of residence for the purchaser to obtain the firearm from the dealer.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and 922(b)(3)]

You could just have the guy take it to a gun store near him in Louisiana and have them ship it to a local gun store near you in Texas (both of whom have an FFL), you fill out the 4473 Federal sheet and pass the check and then send the guy his money. Then it would be completely legal and you wouldn't have to worry about it.

But as far as I know that's the only way you could do it and still be legal.

No. Because you would be taking possession before the gun went through the FFL's book. As said earlier, you must obtain the firearm from a dealer in your State, not from an out-of-state private source. Plus, the seller would be breaking the law to allow you to take possession directly.

Transfer(s) through FFL, pick up ammo (which should be legal) if it's cheaper than shipping.

Why not make the deal (that is, arrange the price), buy the ammo and drive it away, but with the actual gun sale contingent on legally unimpeachable FFL-FFL transfer? The gun's shipment won't be a huge part of the transaction's cost, I'd guess. Include a clause saying that if for some reason the gun transaction doesn't work (who knows why, but stranger things have happened), you'll pay a bump-up on the ammo to have made it worth the special consideration you're getting on the package as a whole, even if it must essentially be bought in two chunks.

That seems to address both parts, even if it is overcomplicated -- blame the Feds :)

I have a gun he was going to be geting in this deal TOO ,,,SO FFL in LA then FFL in TX ^%^%$$# it!
If you're getting a handgun from him, and he's getting a rifle/shotgun from you, you can take care of both transactions at the FFL in Louisiana.

It a handgun for handgun trade + $$$ and mag's, holster, ammo, ect = SHIPING PAIN IN THE A$$ i'm in SE LA. He's in SE TX.= 500-600 mil round trip witch i was willing to do to complete the deal.

"If you see state lines needing to be crossed, have his people contact your people."

Heh, cute formulation ;)

And I guess my idea (make deal, drive ammo, get gun the complicated way) has less appeal when it's that many miles to drive. Having lived in Texas (Austin and later El Paso), I know you can't just say how near something is to "Texas" without some more details ;)
