Is it just me or?

THR does seem like a pretty good place as far as Internet forums go. As far as the two threads mentioned, one started by bashing a particular gun. What do you expect with a OC vs CC, AK vs AR, Mac vs PC, Intel vs AMD, nVidia vs ATI, Ford vs Chevy, and so on type thread?

THR still has a lot of good info, I found the site while Googling for a M1A zero target I could print and just lately I read a good thread on scopes, which is the next step for me.

Heres something for you: this is a site, not a "sight". Not trying to be an a$$, just a huge peeve of mine. I think texting and the internet is going to be the end of proper grammer. You're, your. A lot, alot. Break, brake.

And here is one of my annoying triggers - it does not have relavence to the subject matter . Spelling and grammer policing seems an inherant part of some peoples needs, regardless of the subject matter. I believe it is almost always off topic and annoying.
If one has nothing to say regarding the topic at hand , they should say nothing. Not turn every post into a spelling bee,

polite

you ought to go on the main news comments.the worst language and comments, its the new culture.cursing seems the only words they know.and it seems from the content it is all the liberal posters.
oh well back to guns .bye

While I agree that a thread should not turn into a spelling bee or a grammar lesson - it is also one of my peeves.

Using the spell-check feature would eliminate much of it and only takes a second. Using the "enter" button to break up your prose into paragraphs also helps.

It isn't about perfection...it's about readability. I think everyone has something to contribute, but when I have to decipher what the poster is trying to communicate with incorrect word usage and/or wade through a page of run-on words with no break for a new thought - I just skip those posts.

BTW, "musick" is spelled "music". :neener:

The quality of language you are exposed to most often is the quality of language that you adopt. This is the reason why Latvians have Latvian accents and why Irish people have Irish accents for example. It is the language we are exposed to, and thus we adopt it.

For written expression, nothing influences people as much as what they read and write themselves. The way you type affects you in several ways: how well you communicate your ideas, how people reading your messages view you, and how well you type in the future.

We were given eight fingers and two thumbs so you could use them all on a keyboard, not so you can be a slacker and just use three to “save time”. Your typing style is a habit. Unless you take steps to fix it, you are going to be typing like that for a while. I can tell you now that that is a bad thing.

The lack of apostrophes in internet forums, for whatever reason, does not bother me a whole lot. I am guilty of that faux pas myself. The occasional spelling error from a poster - I can tolerate that. But when someone creates a post asking about needing allot of help regarding the best break pads 4 there car is, well, I pass immediate judgement on that person.

Understand, I am not trying to belittle your pet peeve, but wanted to add clarity to my own.

Well we're now veering way off topic - but what the heck.

I've written complex 25 page NIH grant applications using four fingers and two thumbs. I can assure you that if they aren't well written (i.e., spelling, grammar, and formatting) they don't even get reviewed. I've never learned to type properly - and I'm too old to care any more. Typing style has NOTHING to do with good writing. Effort does.

If a writer doesn't care enough about what he or she is writing to put in the minimal effort to meet the rudimentary requirements for readability - why should I care enough to read it?

Then there is always this guy. oh you are so smart.:neener: If I wanted to have proper grammer I would go to a grammer "site". Notice the join date- 05-19-09, you have proved one of my points precisely.

The above was the only negative post in that thread

AKElroy, it was not ment to be negative, it was ment to be informative, I understand you getting mad, but understand I didn't have all the facts. I lashed back at you and that was wrong of me. I should have explained myself better after your post towards me. Yes we are cool.

Well, this thread is sure on its way to demonstrating/illustrating the OPs point by degenerating into a sniping contest over grammar and spelling.

To the OP: Nope, apparently it isn't just you. Lots of anger out there these days and it's sad that it has come to this.

Suppose we could just throw a bucket of gasoline on this fire by asking: Which is better? The .45 or 9mm?

Is this a joke?
No, I believe they are serious, but not serious enough.

This is fun.

The forum name "The High Road".......

says it all. It's my impression that this forum was created with the idea that folks could communicate politely (within reason).

I think there may be a little less courtesty than there once was. But on the whole, it's still more hospitable than a lot of "sites".

I've found "The High Road" a great place to find good information and gather some valuable opinions from some folks through the years.

I will say this though, if you're looking for an argument, this ain't a bad place to start.

Actually, it's grammar.

And using someone's join date as some sort of club to try to prove something is rather childish and completely unproductive. As the OP said, it only serves to "belittle" them and lacks a "cool calmness." It adds nothing and only proves that perhaps you, the OP, who started this lockable thread (IMHO) might want to take your own advice.

So to answer your question, I submit that it is probably just you.

P.S. Maybe a poll next time? That way we could vote on if it is just you... :D

I am 29 years old and even I know that I will learn something from everyone, even if they are 99 years old or 5 years old.

Apparently, this doesn't apply if they joined the forum after you did...

Yeah...but I had to go back and edit my own misspellings!

Like I said...perfection and correcting others is not the goal. However, readability should be - if you want your posts to be read by the largest possible audience.

we all have a right to our opinion. whether ill advised or thoroughly investigated. a little friction is going to happen, either way. it is a good thing, as disagreement is how we settle on better solutions.

show me the man who doesn't get mad and make remarks he later regrets, and i'll show you lobotomy scars.

i suppose the real answer is that in order to obtain forgiveness, we must give the same.

ClintC,

and what then, let them bully you into silence? just go on adding your opinion into the mix. the more ideas we have to sort through, the better/more accurate the conclusions drawn from it will be.

ClintC - your behavior in many threads, and specifically the Marlin/Winchecter94 thread, is just shy of trollish. You tend to sound rude, condescending, antagonistic, and appear to do whatever you can to ENCOURAGE an argument. Whatever you get in return is engendered almost entirely by the approach that you bring to the table.

If you want people to treat you better, you might want to ditch the attitude.

rbernie, I just went through all my post and have come to the conclusion you don't know what the hell you are talking about. I have never said anything to anyone that didn't say something to me first. In the Marlin/Winchecter94 thread I was commended for having High Road-style restraint here is the post.

Don't own either one, Marlin or Winchester, but a lever action .30-30 is next on my list. Thanks for starting the thread, Clint. You've shown High Road-style restraint too in response to some non-High Road-style personal attacks, so I commend you.

I read something once and it went something like this: You will have bad followers when they have bad leadership. I find that to be very true at this site. Good bye all, you have just lost a contributor to this site.

I will never tell someone how to raise their kids.

In my opinion though that is way to much rifle for a 8 year old boy and he should not be on a scoped rifle either.

Start out with a BB gun, then a pellet rifle, then a .22lr, next comes a shotgun, and none of these should have a scope on them. Kids need to learn how to shoot before they can use a scope.

Sorry if this offends, but this is how it is.

Seems to me that in the first thread you listed as an example, you were the first one with anything condescending to say. That strikes me as odd.
