Title says it all - can I shoot steel-cased ammo in my 1943 or 1944 m1 carbine? I'm not a reloader (yet) so I'm looking for the cheapest ammo available that won't hurt the rifle.

Any input is appreciated.

Shouldn't be an issue. Steel cases are made from mild steel that is much softer than the rifle. However, since you're going to reload anyway, shooting a bunch of commercial ammo and keeping the brass(or as much as you can find after ejection) isn't a bad idea.

What else is it made for? While there are a handfull of other guns chambered for the .30 US carbine round, the ammo was intended to be used in the carbine.

I have been to a number of matches where carbines have choked on steel case ammo that work fine with brass cased ammo. I don't believe it was the cases, per se, but more likely the loads being used.
