So far looking at my collection tonight I have as follows:

686 S&W 4"
Beretta 92FS standard blue
Beretta 92FS inox Brigadier
One compact type M blue -- inox M is gone to my father
Ruger New Single Six 4" blue

Looking at this, one could make the arguement that enough is enough...but given the gun laws and how tough it is to get a gun -- isn't buying a firearm making a statement? Besides, I have so many more guns on my must have list -- I'd feel left out to stop here. Is this unreasonable or am I justified in wanting a large gun collection?

Only sixty-six more and you'll be caught up with me!

(Then again, I'm eyeing a few more milsurp rifles right now that I can't live without. :) )

Tamara, do you really have that many guns? If you do, you make me feel better. I thought I was overdoing it with 23 total. I must just be a beginner.

Is it possible to have too many guns?
Short answer ... yes, when space for storage becomes a problem!! :D

Otherwise ... not really .... tho you may get labelled with that dreaded word misuse ''Arsenal''!:p

Including shotties I think (not checked inventory list!) ... we are running approx 54! Oops! ''Investment'' - that's the excuse ..

The only way you can have too many guns is if you have more than you can feed and care for.

If you do have more guns than you can feed and care for, please let me know and I'll be glad to give them a good home where they can be fed and cared for properly.

Do your part to make sure all guns get good, caring homes.

It's the least we can all do.

I believe you are allowed as many guns as you fancy, as long as you love all your guns the same ;) .

Tamara and Preacherman Seventy-plus guns, huh? Sheesh! I don't think I own seventy pairs of socks! How do you people organize stuff like that? Do you use a luggage carousel like at the airport? :D

Oh, and Hkmp5sd that goes for you, too! ;)

If you are hold up in a bunker, surrounded by piles of guns, ammo, bottled water and canned beans - hallucinating about decking out like Pancho Villa and taking a stand at the end of the cul de sac to fend off hords of drug crazed baggy pants teenagers - you probably have too many guns.

Otherwise, get as many as you want. Seems more entertaining than collecting beenee babys, ceramic ducks or Star Trek action figures to me.

I've currently got more guns than I REALLY NEED, less than I REALLY WANT - 1 bottle of water & 2 cans of beans. So I'm good for more.

Too many guns?

Not really, cuz at one time I owned numerous firearms;
and 21 of them were handguns. Insurance on these
were quite expensive; and it was a pain providing the
TLC that each of them commanded. Other than that, it
was a joy as I had some really nice weapons. I don't
think one person can have too many; or too much
weapons (firearms).

Is it possible to have too many guns?
Possibly...if you're not concentrating most of your dedication to your main defensive arm. Having one gun you shoot good is better than a dozen you have only learned to shoot well.

While I've owned a couple dozen handguns in the past 20 years, I've dedicated the last 8 years of my life attempting to master one specific model. Achieving 'mastery' is virtually impossible, but it's a goal that's even harder when continuously changing your 'main' defensive arm.

I'm reading The Turner Diaries for a terrorism class I'm taking at Curry College. It's interesting because they talk about this "Cohen Act" which denies private citizens from owning firearms in the United States. I know it's a racist book but my point is that this part isn't entirely fiction. Check on the Beretta forum under "What's your Deal" and find out about what's happening in Illinois. They have a hearing set to pass a bill that will ban assault weapons. If it passes all semi automatic rifles and shotguns will be banned for private citizens of that state. Those that don't turn in their guns will have only 90 days before being seized by police. This is the real deal folks. Check it out at www.berettaforum.net

This is why I ask the question about owning a gun in and of itself being a political statement. On the one hand, I understand what I have might be a lot. I'm not well off by a long shot but I love guns and I feel if I don't exercise my right -- it'll be taken away. What the Hell ever happened to the Second Amendment in Illinois?

Mastro ..... I am suffering cold chills! Plus the inevitable ''could this really be happening''?

I need say hardly more than ... i used to be in UK .. worn the t-shirt, so to speak.

E=MC^2,

Achieving 'mastery' is virtually impossible, but it's a goal that's even harder when continuously changing your 'main' defensive arm.

Beware of false dichotomies. ;) Just because someone owns a bunch of different handguns doesn't necessarily mean that they keep changing their primary defensive gun. They may have one dedicated carry gun, and the rest are range toys.

Myself, on the other hand, I only own two handguns: A 1911 and a S&W DA revolver. Repeated over and over and over and over and... ;)

If you can afford them and have a place to keep them - keep buying if that is what you enjoy.

Hillbilly appears to be a very wise person. What he said--you can have too many guns if you can't care for and feed all of them. For many years my uncle bought one gun every payday (he was paid monthly). As a result he ended up with a lot of junk, and he was unable to properly maintain the insane number of guns he owned (several hundred).

This was great for me. I could use any of his guns any time I wanted. As a result, I ran thousands of rounds through a paratrooper model M1 Carbine, had a Super Blackhawk for about four years (till he finally needed to use it for something or other), had free access to a number of 1911s, though his were all older military Colts and needed a lot of work, and sampled just about every gun imagineable. I was able to experience shooting all sorts of oddball guns.

It must have rubbed off on me. I normally spend $2000 or more each summer on my other hobby--riding and racing motorcycles. This year a racing accident has left me unable to ride until at least August or September. Thus I plan to spend about that amount purchasing a few guns that I have wanted for years. In fact, I'm a little worried about getting on the radar of the ATF. How many guns can a person buy in one year without having ATF troops kicking down one's front door? Sounds like some of you have pushed that boundary.

It also depends what you want the guns for. For example, my "collection" can be divided into several categories:

1. Personal defence and CCW - handguns, shotguns and rifles.

2. Military surplus collection.

3. Training weapons - a fairly wide selection that I use when teaching others, to give them a "feel" for what's available.

4. Hunting.

5. Trade goods - I sometimes get a gun in a trade that I don't really want, but which I know is good trading material: so it goes into the pot for future trades.

I guess if I did away with the training weapons, gave up the milsurp collection (which is seldom shot), and disposed of the trade goods, I could easily get by with less than a dozen guns for the rest of my needs.

I read somewhere (may even have been here on THR) that you have too many guns when you can't afford to buy the oil necessary to lubricate them. :D

Hope that helps...

BTW, how many guns does it take to make an arsenal? And then, what's the next increment after an arsenal called? That's how many I want.
