I've been shopping for an AR-15 to add to my collection. I prefer high quality firearms, although I doubt I will ever wear one out.
I'm looking at some Colt 6920's which seem to be selling in the range of $1700. I could buy a Bushmaster for $1200 and probably the same for a S&W M&P. I've done a lot of research on the pluses and minuses of each, Colt seems to be the standard. My question is: Is the Colt worth $500 more than the Bushmaster? I want a reliable AR, I'm not interested in optics (although I want the A-3 style) and I probably won't be in competition. Keep resale in mind although I've never sold a firearm I own. I also don't want to buy a lesser model and later regret the purchase.

I guess it depends

On whether we are going to be able to continue to buy them. If I could only buy one of those and not get the chance again, I would go for the Colt.

Depends on what you expect out of it. If it's a range toy that you won't be trusting your life to, get the Bushmaster. If you are going to be trusting your life to it, you need to carefully consider the benefits of each before making a decision. Either way, it's an AR-15 so you need to be able to clean it and fix it yourself. If the bolt breaks, you need to know how to deal with that and quickly. Get spare parts. It doesn't matter which brand you go with, this is a necessary expense.

If you're not in a hurry to buy, wait. Those prices are high with "panic buying" occuring recently. Bush and S&W are usually in teh 800-900 range, with teh colts about $1200.

you mentioned resale value, so i'd suggest colt. i have a feeling even if prices drop, you won't see a 6920 under $1400 anymore.
