Weird question, I know...

Thanks to the advice you guys gave me, I'm 95% sure the extractor is the issue with my 1911 Mil-Spec. Would it be worth it to send it back to SA as opposed to having a gunsmith look at it locally? I would imagine an extractor isn't a huge fix. As stupid as it sounds, I really don't want to send it out. Buying this gun was a huge pain in the ass and the idea of sending it off after having it for a month just makes me angry.

If it were me, no I wouldn't send it back. Going back and forth for a factory fix is pia most of the time.

But that's just me, and the wife says I'm a pia most of the time.

Call Springfield, they might even pick up the shipping. The gun can be sent dirrectly back to you, without an ffl. Check out FedEx for shipping, I've sent out many handguns using FedEx ground, I've yet to pay over $10.00, insured.:)

My FFL was tired of shipping at the Post Office, and told me about the ground policy. I went in to my local FedEx to see for myself, and they said the overnight policy had changed. The handgun must be plain packaged, and addresed to a confirmed FFL holder or Manufacturer. Not saying yours will let you ship, but mine does.:)

Frankly, I have heard from several folks that the first thing to go on their SA was the extractor. Apparently it isn't very strong. I have an SA loaded, but haven't put enough rounds through it se break the extractor. That being said, I'm seriously thinking about going ahead and having a Wilson Combat extractor installed to head off any problems at the pass. If "Murphy" is present, your extractor will fail at exactly the worst time!

Thanks for the link, Big001. I'm new to handguns so I'm not sure I'll be able to fix it myself but I will check it out tonight.

It seems that on the second to last round jams on ejection and the extractor doesn't grab the final round at all.

I'd contact Springfield and ship it back.
They should pay the shipping.
My philosophy is that you already paid for the gun once and they already screwed up by supplying you with a defective gun.
The least they can do is pick up the cost of fixing it.

Cougfan +1

Better use of the money; rather pay for an upgrade versus the same old thing that may or may not work and avoid shipping and turn around (which will inevitably take longer than it should)... WC may work just fine as it comes.
Cheers, TF

I am interested in getting the Wilson extractor put in my Springfield. Where can I get online to see Wilson and the cost of Parts? Thanks fellas

Yes. send it back and take advantage of their great Customer Service and Lifetime Warranty.

I've been debating the same thing myself. My 1911 has about 4500 rounds through it and has started "crunching" the last round ejected from a mag. Plus, I have a stripped grip bushing. Does anyone know what kind of turnaround time SA has?

Thanks

Put a Wilson on it and have it adjusted (you can do this) and be done with problem Springfield cuts corner on extractors and they won't hold proper tension . A million posts about the extractor problem. Nice pistols cheap extroctors.

Do it yourself. Extractor adjustment and maintanence is just part of 1911 ownership.

Not a bad idea of upgrading to a Wilson Bulletproof extractor, either.

Para had the same problem in the days before their PXT. I was in the same boat as the OP and I just replaced the extractor.

I use the Wilson Compat BP extractor when I replace one (and so far, I've replaced: one) I dont mean to speak for him, but 1911Tuner thinks highly of the Ed Brown Hardcore extractor, I've seen him recommend it many times.

i wouldn't send it back for that, but i will say if there is ever a issue that is a big one, sa will take care of you and get it back to you promptly and pay shipping both ways.
