I'm semi-retired and thinking about moving to Oklahoma, maybe to the McAlester or Sallisaw area. East Oklahoma, actually.

What's it like arouind there? Is it a good place for gun owners? Can I get a good place for about $120,000? Should I look at the Eufaula area too? Other places? Thanks. 44

You'd be right at home in eastern Oklahoma. There are lots of acreages with homes already built on them in the 120's. I have family in the SE area of the state (Hugo) and I always feel welcomed by the people there. Lots of gun-friendly folks in that part of the state(E/SE). I will probably buy some land out that way when I retire, but I've a few years to go 'less I hit the Texas lotto. :D I'd be happy to help you with any additional info or questions you might have, just PM me. Carl

carlos is right. $120,000 will buy a nice place in SE okla. around the lake is nice. there is lots of public land for outdoor activities in the southeastern part of the state. saddlebum

Sallisaw I would classify as east, McAlester SE. I live in the Grand Lake area, which news people seem to refer to as "extreme northeastern Oklahoma." Land right around the lake is expensive, but ten miles from the lake you can get a pretty nice house and 40 acres for 120,000. We are very gun friendly up here, lots of duck and goose hunting, a good indoor range that rents full autos near Wyandotte. I don't know what you're looking for in terms of scenery, water, medical care and so on, but all of Oklahoma to the east of Tulsa is scenic once you get east of the Tulsa sprawl.

CCW in Oklahoma is easy. We are a state where it is legal to own class III weapons.

Well this is good news and I sure appreciate the input. Carlos - Thanks. I'll get in touch with you.

I lived in Broken Arrow from '78 to '82 but I mainly had to work - so I only got out to the lakes once. I was out to the Illinois River for a canoe trip, and to Lake Tenkiller. Such GREAT country.

I always wondered what it's like down Poteau way. I've never been there. I picture hills and lots of piney woods, which we like a lot. Is the town pretty good? Is there a better town down there?

And can anyone tell me what it's like to live in the town of Tahlequah? Sometimes we think we'd like to live near a university like NE State. Pretty good, or are there some drawbacks to it. Maybe living outside of town is better?

My wife is from Drumright and I met her working in Broken Arrow. I think we'll take a vacation this Spring and go up and down the east side of the state from top to bottom and check it out. I think we'll end up there somewhere. Thanks again. 44

I've never lived in eastern oklahoma, but have driven through lots of times, and always had the impression that it was very similar to rural Texas, ie very gun friendly and quite affordable. They've got some monster stripers and catfish up there in lake Texoma.

You might want to invest a couple grand in a tornado shelter though:D
