Is the AR forward assist necessary

I have used mine. Now I am a competitive highpower rifle shooter. And I reload my own ammunition. I think I am careful about it, I use a small base die and use cartridge headspace gages to determine how much I am setting my cartridge shoulders back.

When you shoot standing, you single load the rifle. I have had one slamfire with a WSR when I dropped the bolt on a round in the chamber. That scared me and everyone else on the firing line as the round kicked dirt up in front of the line.

As you can read, http://www.fulton-armory.com/SlamFire3.htm, this very practice caused a lot of slamfires in the early AR, and forced a redesign of the firing pin. Unfortunately I was using the "new" more sensitive WSR, and I believe that contributed to the slamfire.

So I modified my loading. I will drop a round in the chamber, hit the bolt release, and lower the bolt half way, then release. On a couple of occasions I had to bump the forward assist to get the bolt all the way forward. And I think I have had to do that in the rapid fire stages.

Regardless, I do not want to shoot an alibi, so I always rap the magazine and bump the forward assist when doing magazine changes.

The game I play is not life critical, but I still think it is good practice.
